Shooting Slump Hurts Ducks In Loss

Oregon's offensive funk continued Friday as the Ducks dropped a 63-53 decision to Colorado in Matthew Knight Arena.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon's offensive funk continued Friday as the UO women's basketball team had its season-low point total in a 63-53 loss to Colorado before 5,919 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks shot 36.4 percent and didn't make a three-pointer for the first time this season, dropping their fifth game in the last seven. Coming off a 20-of-80 shooting performance at Stanford, Oregon was 20-of-55 on Friday, including 0-of-16 from three-point range.
"The last couple games we've defended well enough to win basketball games," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "(But) 20-of-80 from the field the other night, 0-of-16 from three tonight, you're just not going to beat good teams the Pac-12 with those kind of shooting percentages."
Endyia Rogers and Grace VanSlooten had 15 points each to lead the Ducks, and Rogers had seven rebounds. Taylor Hosendove added 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench. The Ducks entered the night as the Pac-12's second-highest scoring team and its top three-point shooting team, but the trend recently hasn't been as positive.
"We've all gotta do better, and it starts with me," Graves said. "And I thought we had a good week of practice — energy was great, execution was really good. And then we get in a game, and sometimes we miss a few early, we let our shots affect our body language and our demeanor. They're young kids and they're trying to figure it out. We haven't been in this position before, so we're all trying to figure it out. And I'm confident that we will. I really like this group, you guys, I really like this group. They care."

How It Happened: The Ducks (14-8, 5-6 Pac-12) struck first on a three-point play by Rogers, but that would be Oregon's only lead of the night. Colorado scored six straight as the UO women missed a couple shots in the post, and the Buffs put together another run of 9-2 after the Ducks had tied it, 8-8. Hosendove made her presence felt with four points late in the quarter, and it was 19-16 through one.
More misses in the paint hurt Oregon early in the second, but a putback by Hosendove and a basket by Phillipina Kyei kept the Ducks within three at 23-20. The Buffs scored another six straight, however, and it took a jumper by Taya Hanson on the final UO possession to get Oregon back within 32-25 at halftime.
Colorado opened the door for a comeback in the third, starting out in a 1-of-12 shooting slump. The Ducks made it a one-possession game at 34-31 on a jumper by VanSlooten, and Oregon capped the quarter with baskets by Hosendove and Rogers to trail 39-37 entering the fourth.
The Buff slammed the door shut, however, opening the final quarter with a 10-1 run. Buckets by VanSlooten and Rogers got Oregon back within six at 55-49, but Colorado finished by making its last four field-goal attempts to hold off the Ducks.
Notable: The Ducks failed to make a three-pointer for the first time since going 0-of-16 against California at home last season. … Oregon has made eight total three-pointers over its last three games; the Ducks have made eight three-pointer or more in a single game 11 different times this season. … Chance Gray's missed free throw in the first quarter was her first in conference play this season.

Quotable:
Head coach Kelly Graves on the Ducks rushing some shots as three-pointers weren't falling
"It's like anything, you start pressing, and so when you get a shot, you get a look, it's human nature to say, 'I'm going to be the one to get this going. Just, nobody was the one to get it going."
Head coach Kelly Graves on making some tweaks to get some momentum going
"We tried Chance at the one a little more tonight; she can get downhill a little bit better than our other kids. And at times it looked OK. But we missed some decent looks inside at the rim as well. As few of those go, maybe things change."
