Ducks Drop Season Opener
02/09/23 | Softball
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – No. 24 Oregon sent the tying run to the plate in the sixth inning, but the Ducks' rally fell short in a 7-3 loss to Maryland in the 2023 season opener.
Oregon scored twice in the sixth inning to pull within 6-3. With two outs and two runners on, pinch-hitter Alyssa Daniell grounded out sharply to second to end the Ducks' rally.
The game was Oregon's first of five at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
How it Happened: Oregon (0-1) got off to a rocky start, falling into a 5-0 hole after the first inning. The Terrapins (1-0) used two walks and two hit batters to plate their first run. A single by Trin Schlotterbeck scored two more runs and then a two-out double by Madison Runyan drove in another two for a five-run first inning by Maryland.
After the Terrapins added another run in the bottom the second, Oregon got on the scoreboard in the third. Tehya Bird drew a one-out walk. Paige Sinicki chased pinch-runner Kai Luschar around to third with the first of her three hits on the night. Sinicki was thrown out trying to steal second, but Luschar came home on the play for the Ducks' first run of the game.
Oregon's best chance to catch Maryland came in the sixth inning. Hanna Delgado led off with a single. Terra McGowan's fielder's choice forced Delgado at second, but McGowan went to third on Allee Bunker's single. KK Humphreys walked to load the bases and McGowan came home on a wild pitch. Bunker then scored on Kedre Luschar's infield single as the Ducks closed to within 6-3.
Maryland made a pitching change before Daniell's tough-luck ground out.
One of the bright spots for Oregon was newcomer Elise Sokolsky. The UConn transfer came on in relief of Stevie Hansen (0-1) in the bottom of the first and allowed two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings.
Noteworthy: Bunker tied Neena Bryant (2007-10) for 11th in career hits with 217. Bunker will move into the top 10 with her next hit … Sinicki tied her career high with three hits … Kedre Luschar matched her career high with two hits.
On Deck: Oregon faces a pair of 2022 NCAA Tournament teams – Wisconsin and No. 3 Oklahoma State – Friday at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. The Ducks and Badgers play at 10:30 a.m. Pacific, while the OSU game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Both games will be live streamed on FloSoftball.com.
