03/01/23 | Softball
THIS WEEK
No. 20/20 Oregon will tackle a six-game week with five contests in the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., and a road game Sunday at Long Beach State (12 p.m.). Oregon opens play Thursday against Fresno State (10 a.m.) and then has games Friday versus Minnesota (12:30 p.m.) and Cal Poly (5:30 p.m.). UO plays San Jose State (5:30 p.m.) and LMU (8 p.m.) on Saturday. Minnesota and LMU were both 2022 NCAA Tournament teams.
TRIPLE PLAY
Oregon defeated three different Top 25 teams in a row Feb. 24-25: No. 19 Northwestern (2-1), No. 3 Florida (8-0) and No. 24 Missouri (6-4).
HANSEN NAMED NATIONAL AND PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After winning games against No. 3 Florida, No. 19 Northwestern and No. 24 Missouri at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, Stevie Hansen was named the D1 Softball National Pitcher of the Week and the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week. Overall, Hansen went 4-0 with a 1.27 earned run average. She yielded six runs – four earned – on 14 hits in 22.0 innings. Hansen struck out 13 and walked four. Hansen threw a complete game, one-hit 8-0 shutout against the Gators. She didn't allow a hit until a two-out single in the sixth inning, and faced just two batters over the minimum. Neither runner advanced past first base. Hansen struck out one batter and did not walk any. She was just as effective against Northwestern. Hansen retired the first seven batters she faced and her only blemish on the afternoon was a solo home run by Jordyn Rudd in the fourth inning. After the Ducks took the lead in the top of the seventh, Hansen closed the game out with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh including a called third strike on Emmie Farnum for the final out of the game. Her final line was one run allowed on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Hansen also got the win in relief against Missouri after getting the Ducks out of a jam in the fifth inning and threw five innings in relief against UC San Diego for her fourth win of the weekend. Hansen has won eight decisions in a row and ranks eighth nationally with eight wins.
BUNKER REACHES TOP 5 IN CAREER HITS
Allee Bunker joined the top five in UO career hits last week at the Mary Nutter Invitational. With 234 hits, she's currently tied with Julie Cavanaugh (1988-91) for fifth. Next up are Samantha Pappas (2010-13) in fourth with 238 and Nikki Udria - now UO assistant coach Nikki Ragin - (2014-17) in third with 247.
NO SOUP FOR YOU
Catcher Terra McGowan has already thrown out five would-be base stealers this season. That's tops in the Pac-12 and 15th nationally.
DUCKS IN THE POLLS
Oregon currently sits at No. 20 in both the NFCA Coaches' Poll and the ESPN/USA Softball Poll. It is Oregon's 43rd consecutive appearance in the polls, dating back to the 2020 preseason poll.
VERSATILITY A STRENGTH
Starting at third Feb. 12 against North Dakota State, Vallery Wong, has now played eight positions in her career: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, CF, RF and DP. The only two spots she has not played: SS and P.
NONCONFERENCE SUCCESS UNDER LOMBARDI
Under head coach Melyssa Lombardi, Oregon has posted some of the best non-conference records in program history. Three years ago in 2020, before the season was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ducks were 22-2 through 24 games. That was at the time, the second-best 24-game record in program history. In 2021, the Ducks did that one better, going 23-1 through 24 games. Last season, the Ducks went 19-3 prior to the opening of conference play. Overall, Oregon is 93-17 in nonconference regular season games under Lombardi.
RESERVED SEASON TICKETS SELL OUT
Oregon sold out of reserved season tickets for the 2023 season on Jan. 17 - a full two months prior to the March 17 home opener with Stanford. Single-game reserved tickets have already sold out for the Ducks' games versus UCLA on March 25-26 and only 3 reserved tickets remain for the series opener on March 24. A fourth game nearing a reserved section sell out is Stanford on March 18; just 4 reserved seats are still on sale. Fewer than 100 reserved tickets remain for Oregon's games against Stanford (March 17, 19), Montana (April 3), Portland State DH (April 18), Arizona (April 22-23) and Utah (May 6-7). General admission season and single-game tickets for all games remain on sale (www.goducks.com).
