Ducks drop series to UCLA
03/12/23 | Baseball
EUGENE – Oregon fell behind early and then could not muster any offense to come back in a 16-0 loss to No. 13 UCLA in a Pac-12 Conference game on Sunday at PK Park.
UCLA (12-3, 2-1 Pac-12) picked up the series victory with back-to-back wins after Oregon (9-5, 1-2 Pac-12) won the series opener on Friday.
How It Happened: The Bruins scored four runs in the first and five more in the second to build a 9-0 lead. Oregon starter Jackson Pace lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing eight runs (7 earned) on four hits with three walks.
UCLA added five more in the fifth and two in the ninth to wrap up the scoring.
Oregon was held to three hits. Rikuu Nishida broke up Kelly Austin's no-hit bid in the fourth with a leadoff double. Jacob Walsh added two hits, a double in the fifth and a single in the seventh.
Box Score Notes: Freshman Jackson Jaha made his first career start, serving as the designated hitter before taking the mound (second appearance) in the ninth inning … Nishida made his first career start in right field, while Drew Cowley made his first start of the season at second base … Nishida stole a base, his second of the series and ninth of the season … Walsh (2-for-3) had his third multiple-hit game of the season and the 25th of his career.
On Deck: Oregon will meet Niagara in a nonconference game on Wednesday at 4:05 p.m. at PK Park before embarking on its first round trip of the season at Washington State.
Quotes:
Head Coach Mark Wasikowski
Thoughts on team's energy after first inning:
"That was a big play, you know. Getting out of the first and giving up one run and then missing a routine fly ball that turned into a big inning. It was a big deal. I thought we lost some counts and some other things, but at the end of the day, we didn't prepare a club to play today and that's our fault."
On regrouping from the loss:
"We have to put in a full week of work. That's what you do. You assess the things that you were weak at and you assess the things that need improvement and you attack those things in your week of practice."
