Comeback Bid Comes Up Short

SEATTLE – No. 21 Oregon jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, fell behind in the middle innings and then rallied late, but couldn't quite catch Washington as the 10th-ranked Huskies held off the Ducks, 9-7, Sunday at Husky Softball Stadium.
Â
The two teams combined to score 51 runs in the three-game series.
Â
How it Happened: Oregon (17-6, 1-2) scored three times in the top of the first. KK Humphreys led off the game with a single and scored on Terra McGowan's double to left. Alyssa Daniell singled to advance McGowan to third and then McGowan scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead. Daniell went to third on a ground out then Hanna Delgado beat out an infield single to score Daniell with the third run of the inning.
Â
The Ducks added another run in the second. Kai Luschar pinch-ran for Tehya Bird, who singled. Luschar went all the way to third on Paige Sinicki's sacrifice bunt and scored on Humphrey's sacrifice fly to center.
Â
Oregon's 4-0 lead didn't last. Washington (20-4, 2-1) took advantage of two Oregon errors in the bottom of the second to score five runs, four of which were unearned, to take a 5-4 lead. The Huskies added four more runs in the bottom of the third for a 9-4 advantage.
Â
Stevie Hansen came on in relief in the third inning and gave her teammates a fighting chance by allowing just one run in 3.2 innings.

Â
The Ducks closed the gap to three in the fifth. Bunker led off with a double and McGowan plated her with a double of her own. McGowan advanced to third on a passed ball and then came home on Daniell's sacrifice fly to make it 9-6. Oregon tried to add more in the inning, but Vallery Wong was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on Delgado's single into right field.
Â
Oregon crept closer with another run in the sixth. Humphreys was hit by a pitch and went around to third on an error. McGowan then singled into the hole at short to score Humphreys and make it 9-7.
Â
In the seventh, Wong led off with a double to bring the tying run to the plate. Two outs later, Bird singled and Sinicki was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Humphreys stuck out to end the game.

Â
Noteworthy: Bunker's double in the fifth was the 42nd of her career, tying her for second all-time at Oregon with Olympian Janie (Takeda) Reed (2012-15). Bunker also tied current UO assistant coach Nikki (Udria) Ragin for third in UO career hits with 247. Bunker's one run moved her into a tie for ninth on the UO career list with Kaylan Howard (2010-13) with 146 … Humphreys hit in the leadoff spot for the first time in her Oregon career and went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI … Both Bunker and McGowan hit .500 for the series (6-for-12) … McGowan had seven RBI in the series … Delgado was 3-for-4 on Sunday.
Â
On Deck: Oregon is scheduled to play a nonconference game Monday at Seattle at 3 p.m. (ESPN+).
