Ducks Earn Second Ranked Win, Outlast Utes
03/19/23 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – With four singles matches going to three sets, No. 47 Oregon was able to outlast No. 50 Utah and pick up its second ranked win of the season Sunday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center, 4-2.
Leading 1-0 with a decisive doubles victory, the Ducks (10-4, 3-1) picked up three singles wins, including three-set wins by Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral to go with a straight-set win by Karin Young. Luescher and Martinez Moral both overcame first-set defeats to help UO equal its best four-match start to Pac-12 play in program history.
"We knew it would be a battle, especially since last year it was a battle down to the end in Karin's match, and she won in three (sets)," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "So, we knew it was going to be a battle even though we got the doubles point. They weren't going down without a fight."

The Ducks claimed the doubles point for the second straight match behind a 6-0 win at No. 2 by Jo-Yee Chan and Ares Teixido Garcia and a 6-1 triumph by Myah Petchey and Young on court three.
Chan and Teixido Garcia rebounded from their first doubles defeat Friday and pushed their spring mark to 10-1. Petchey and Young won their second consecutive doubles match of the weekend and improved their dual record to 3-2.
Young, playing on court five, gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead with a straight-set win over Marcela Lopez, 6-3, 6-2. The Minnesota native improved her spring record to 5-3 and 4-1 in two-set contests.
Luescher, down 6-4 in a second-set tiebreaker, fended off two match points against the Utes' Katya Townsend to force a third and decisive set with a 7-6 (8-6) victory. Luescher carried her momentum into a 6-3 win in the third, which proved to be he clinching point.
Martinez Moral fought off a match-point opportunity by Utah's Anastasia Goncharova and earned a split, 3-6, 7-5. In the third, Martinez Moral cruised to a 6-1 win for UO's third point of the afternoon. Martinez Moral has a team-high 10 singles wins this spring.
The Utes tied the match at 2-2 after a 7-5, 6-2 win by Madison Tattini over Teixido Garcia on court two and a three-set victory by Samantha Horwood over Chan at No. 6 (6-1, 5-7, 6-4).
The only singles match to go unfinished was between Petchey and Kaila Barksdale on court four. Petchey came away with a 7-6 (8-6) opening-set win before Barksdale evened the match in the second, 6-2. The pair had just started the third set when the Ducks' victory was sealed.
"It was huge not only for her, but for the momentum of the match for us to be up in those sets, to give us more fire on the (courts) that were trying to come back," Nagle said of Petchey's match. "The start of her third set was huge as well, for her to get that I think it helped Sophie, even though she was about to clinch. Those little things make a big difference."

Next up, UO will play three straight matches away from home, starting with a neutral-site match with Idaho on Wednesday, March 29 before playing at Washington State (March 31) and Washington (April 2).
