Ducks Drop Finale to No. 3 Bruins
03/26/23 | Softball
Oregon had chances again Sunday but couldn't break through for the lead before UCLA rallied in the seventh.
EUGENE, Ore. — More missed opportunities hurt the Oregon softball team Sunday as the No. 19 Ducks missed out on a chance to take a series from No. 3 UCLA by losing 6-2 before 1,824 fans at Jane Sanders Stadium.
One day after leaving 11 runners on base, Oregon stranded 10 on Sunday. The Ducks (20-10) fought back from an early deficit to tie it 2-2 through three innings, but missed chances to take the lead left the door open for UCLA to take control with a four-run seventh inning.
"We just we need to cash in," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "We had opportunities all weekend. We just need to cash in. We didn't cash in enough."
Oregon wrapped up a stretch of three straight series against top-10 teams in the country to open Pac-12 play, winning one game in each against Washington, Stanford and UCLA.

How It Happened: A single with one out followed by a double gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the first, and a two-out base hit brought a second run home. Morgan Scott took over in the circle for Oregon in the second, and pitched a 1-2-3 inning.
In the bottom of the second, KK Humphreys led off with a triple and Vallery Wong plated Humphreys with a single. Katelyn Howard followed with Oregon's third straight hit, but the next three hitters were retired in order.
After another 1-2-3 inning by Scott in the top of the third, Allee Bunker tied the game with her sixth home run of the season. But the Ducks left seven runners on base over the next three innings, including the bases loaded in the fourth. Oregon finished the game 3-for-17 with runners on base, including 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Scott entered the seventh having thrown five straight shutout innings. But after a leadoff single in the seventh, the Bruins hit back-to-back homers with one out to go up 5-2. They tacked on one more before Raegan Breedlove entered for Oregon and got out of the inning. The Ducks were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.
"I think just in all areas, you saw signs of greatness and the saw signs where we let things slip away a little bit," Lombardi said. "So it's about being able to do the stuff that we need to do over and over again, three games straight."
Notable: Bunker's two hits raised her average to .400 on the season. … Bunker's solo home run brought her around for the 149th run scored of her career, tied for seventh in UO history with Kathy Stahl. … Oregon is now 6-7 against ranked teams this spring, including 4-6 against top-10 opponents.

"Big picture the competition that we faced, the type of pitching we faced, offenses that we faced, will go a long, long way for us. This right now, this hurts, because we wanted to come in and take the series, and we had opportunities to take it. Big picture, what does it do for us? It does big things for us. It just doesn't feel that way right now."
Junior infielder KK Humphreys on how the team regroups this week
"I think the biggest thing is just staying together. Times like this, it's easy for teams to just kind of get frustrated and kind of go away from everything we have built. We have built an amazing program, from last year to this year. It's the biggest jump we've probably ever seen. So I think just being able to rely on each other, stick together and just trust the process that we're going through right now."
Up Next: The Ducks open a three-game series at Oregon State on Friday (6 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
