THE DUCKS vs. THE BOBCATS
The Ducks and the Bobcats will meet for the first time on the NCATA National Championship mat in West Virginia. Oregon has been a fixture during championship week, having never missed the tournament. Frostburg State is in its third active season of competition and will be making its first NCATA National Championship appearance on Thursday. The Bobcats are 10-2 this season and won the Mountain East Conference for the first time in program history in the third season under 2023 NCATA Coach of the Year, Katie Nunley.
DUCKS RACK UP NATIONAL HONORS
On Tuesday, two Ducks added themselves to the long list of NCATA All-Americans from Oregon. Senior Karly Nowak and junior Makena Carrion became the 15th and 16th athletes in program history to earn the postseason recognition. The Ducks have now had 28 total All-America honors since 2011. Nowak was an essential contributor for the Ducks, competing in at least nine events in all six meets while serving as the go-to option for the aerial tumbling pass. Carrion, competing as a top and tumbler, led the open pyramid to an average score of 9.86 this season, making it Oregon's highest-scoring heat. In addition, 22 student-athletes received recognition for their academic achievements as part of the NCATA Honor Roll.
SUSNARA ASCENDING
Oregon reasserted its standing as an elite program in year two under head coach Taylor Susnara. The Ducks are 4-2 on the season, with the only two losses coming against No. 1 Baylor. Susnara has claimed five ranked wins, including three upset victories over Azusa Pacific (twice) and Gannon. Oregon earned the No. 2 seed for the 2023 NCATA National Championships after earning the No. 5 seed last year in Susnara's first season. The former Oregon All-American and assistant coach was named the head coach of the acrobatics and tumbling program in June of 2021. Susnara was a three-time NCATA All-American for the Ducks from 2015-18 before working as an assistant for three seasons under then-head coach Keenyn Won. Susnara helped Oregon compile a 13-7 record in her three seasons as an assistant. During those three years, the Ducks had at least one student-athlete earn an NCATA weekly honor after 10 of its 15 regular-season meets while maintaining a No. 2 national ranking in all 15 meets of Susnara's first two seasons as an assistant.
