Ducks Drop Heartbreaker in Pac-12 Quarterfinals
05/11/23 | Softball
TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 17 Oregon dropped a heartbreaking, see-saw battle to No. 7 Stanford, 4-3, Thursday night in quarterfinals of the inaugural Pac-12 Tournament at Arizona's Hillenbrand Stadium.
Oregon led 2-0 into the sixth, thanks to an Alyssa Daniell home run, only to have the Cardinal knot things up, 2-2, with two out in the bottom of the sixth. The Ducks regained the lead on Tehya Bird's RBI in the top of the seventh, but Stanford plated two runs in the bottom of the frame to close out the game.
"I thought we played really, really well," said coach Melyssa Lombardi. "That was a tough way to lose at the end."
The Ducks (35-15) now await Sunday's NCAA Tournament selection show to learn their postseason destination.
How It Happened: Daniell got the Ducks on the board with a two-run home run in the second inning. Terra McGowan walked and was sacrificed to second by Ariel Carlson. Daniell then crushed the first pitch she saw from Alana Vawter over the wall in center field for her eighth home run of the season.
Stanford (40-12) evened things up with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Emily Young homered down the left field line to cut Oregon's lead to 2-1. After Kyra Chan hit an infield single. Stanford tied the game at 2-2 on a double by Emily Schultz.
Oregon regained the lead in the top of the seventh. Carlson singled and stole second. She came around to score on Bird's single through the left side.
The Ducks' 3-2 lead was short-lived. Kylie Chung led off the bottom of the seventh with a pinch-hit home run to tie the game at 3-3. River Mahler beat out an infield single and then scored the winning run on an errant throw to third during the next at-bat.
Morgan Scott (12-6) was dominant early, allowing just three hits through five innings before running into trouble the last two frames.
Notable: Oregon turned its 20th double play of the season in the sixth inning … Bird was 2-for-3 on Thursday … Kedre Luschar hit her second double of the season … Allee Bunker moved into sole possession of second place in UO career at-bats with 765.
Quotable:
Head Coach Melyssa Lombardi on moving forward
"Now it's just about we respond and get ready for what's next in the NCAA Tournament."
Up Next: Oregon will find out its postseason destination Sunday during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show (4 p.m., ESPN2).
