Ducks Advance To NCAA Championships
05/17/23 | Men's Golf
BATH, Mich. – The Oregon men's golf team will compete at the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row after advancing out of the NCAA Bath Regional with a third-place finish on Wednesday at Eagle Eye Country Club.
After starting the day in third place and 11 shots above the cut line, the No. 22 Ducks struggled to find their footing early in the final round and saw that cushion get down to one stroke. Oregon bounced back with a terrific finish on the back nine, combining for seven birdies and an eagle against just two bogeys from the four counting student-athletes across the final five holes.
Oregon placed third at 14-under par following a 1-over 285 in the final round, with Georgia (-29), No. 3 Illinois (-21), No. 10 Florida (-12) and No. 15 Texas (-10) taking the other four qualifying spots to next week's 2023 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale (May 26-31).
Today was a difficult day," head coach Casey Martin said. "The course played much harder than the last two days, and the stress was intense. But we weathered a bad stretch in the middle of the round and are so excited to be taking this crew back to Arizona."
Oregon will be making its 32nd all-time appearance at the NCAA Championships, and its first back-to-back appearance since a run of five straight from 2014-18.
How it Happened: Oregon began to separate itself and secure its spot at the par-5 14th hole, where the counting quartet of Owen Avrit, Greg Solhaug, Nate Stember and Greyson Leach combined to shoot 5-under par. Leach got it started with a birdie, and Solhaug followed with an eagle that gave the Ducks a three-shot cushion on the cut line. Stember and Avrit each followed with birdies, and Stember added another at No. 15.
Leach was the top Duck in the final round, following up a 3-under 68 on Tuesday with a 2-under 69 in the final round. Leach was 1 over through 13 holes before his birdie at No. 14, and he ended his round with back-to-back birdies to go sub-70.
Avrit was the final counter on Wednesday with a 2-over 73, but finished as Oregon's top player on the leaderboard in a tie for fifth overall at 6-under par. Avrit's birdie at No. 14 got him back to 2 over after three bogeys in four holes, and he finished strong with four pars.
Avrit is the first Duck to finish top five at a NCAA Regional since Edwin Yi placed second in 2019. He earned his sixth top-five showing of the season while placing in the top 10 for the eight time and the top 20 for the ninth time.
Solhaug posted an even-par 71 while recording his second eagle of the season, tying for 11th overall at 4-under par. After making a double bogey at No. 11 to get to 2 over, Solhaug got three strokes back in three holes with a birdie at No. 12 and his eagle at No. 14.
Stember joined Leach with three birdies in the final five holes to help Oregon hold its position, finishing with a 1-over 72. Stember ended the week alone in 17th overall at 3-under par, and Leach gave the Ducks four players in the top 20 in a tie for 20th at 1 under.
Notable: Oregon was the top team in the field on par-5 holes at 23-under par, and the Ducks led the field with four total eagles … Avrit tied for the best individual score on par-5s at 7-under par, and Stember was right behind at 6 under … Oregon has now counted all 33 of Avrit's rounds this season … Leach posted his second straight sub-70 round and 13th of the season.
