Offense powers Ducks to series win
05/20/23 | Baseball
The Ducks (33-20, 16-14 Pac-12) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back after plating six runs through the first three innings and topping off the performance with a six-run seventh inning.
How it Happened: The Oregon bats carried over the momentum from Friday's victory, scoring three runs in the top half of the first. Drew Cowley started things with two outs after getting hit by a pitch. Sabin Ceballos followed with a single before back-to-back doubles by Tanner Smith and Drew Smith made it 3-0.
Another freshman pitcher stepped up for Oregon, with Matthew Grabmann getting the start on the bump. Grabmann (1-3) secured his first career win and quality start after going 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs and striking out three.
The Ducks tacked on two more behind Cowley's 15th home run of the season, placing the Oregon shortstop in second place all-time in a single season in the category. After Utah (22-32-1, 9-20-1 Pac-12) added its first run in the bottom of the second, the Ducks' held a 5-1 lead heading into the third.
Oregon added its sixth run following a pair of costly errors from the Utes that allowed T. Smith to score after leading off the inning with a walk. Utah would get one back following a solo shot to open the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-2 ball game.
Ceballos and T. Smith began the fifth with a pair of singles. With two outs and two runners on, Bennett Thompson smacked the first triple of his career to left center to make it an 8-2 advantage for the Ducks. Grabmann struck out the first two Utes in the bottom of the fifth before stranding a runner on second to end the threat.
The extra-base hits continued to roll for Oregon. Rikuu Nishida tripled to center on the first pitch of the sixth inning, eventually scoring on a ground out for Cowley's third RBI of the game. Grabamnn wrapped up his day with an eight-pitch sixth inning to retire Utah in order.
The Ducks put the game out of reach with a six-run seventh inning. Gavin Grant drove in the first two with a two-run RBI double down the left-field line and Nishida singled to center to bring home Grant from second. After another error by the Utes and a walk loaded the bases, Nishida scored on a wild pitch before Ceballos plated Colby Shade and Cowley to give Oregon a 15-2 advantage.
The Oregon bullpen closed out the rest of the afternoon, pitching a combined three innings and giving up one run with three strikeouts to seal the game at 15-3.
Box Score Notes: Cowley now has 60 RBI on the season, the most in a single season by an Oregon player … Cowley and Nishida each move up for a tie with the third most runs scored in a season at 54 … D. Thompson (4-for-5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI) set a new career-best with four hits and matched a career high with two RBI ...
