Ducks Drop Super Regional Opener
05/25/23 | Softball
Oregon scored first Thursday, but Oklahoma State seized momentum to gain the advantage in their best-of-three series.
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oregon will be playing to extend its season Friday after dropping a Super Regional opener Thursday to No. 9 Oklahoma State, 8-1.
The Ducks (38-16) struck first Thursday, going up 1-0 on an RBI single by Alyssa Daniell in the second inning at Cowgirl Stadium. But she was the last UO batter to reach, and Oklahoma State broke the game open with three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth — with five of those seven runs unearned.
"This is best two out of three," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "We wanted to get the first one; we didn't, but we've still got two more games to go. And what I love about this team is that any time something hasn't gone our way, we've learned from it, grown from it and it's made us better."
Some of Oregon's best highlights Thursday were on defense, including an unassisted double play by Allee Bunker at second base. But the Ducks also committed a couple of costly errors that helped OSU seize momentum.
"You're never out until the last out … or the last pitch has been thrown in the game," Bunker said. "So I think that's our mentality going forward. Softball is a game of ups and downs, and you need to know how to regroup and get better from losses and failure. And so I think tomorrow, we're just excited for the opportunity to play again together."

How It Happened: It was the Ducks who had momentum early. Kai Luschar singled to open the game and stole second, swiping her 14th base to tie for the team lead this season. She was stranded there, but Oregon broke through in the second.
With the game still scoreless, KK Humphreys singled to lead off the second. Hanna Delgado moved Humphreys over to second, and Daniell brought her in with a single for a 1-0 lead.

At that point, Daniell said, "we had a lot of energy and we were ready for the coming innings, and we just had a lot of belief."
From there, though, Oregon's bats went cold. Oklahoma State tied it 1-1 with a one-out homer off UO starter Morgan Scott in the fourth, sparking a three-run inning. After a walk and a double, an errant throw home after a comebacker allowed the go-ahead run to score, and an RBI single made it 3-1.
Raegan Breedlove came in with the bases loaded and got the Ducks out of the jam. But a walk, another error and an RBI groundout made it 4-1 in the fifth, and two batters later the Cowgirls tacked on a three-run homer. OSU added another insurance run in the sixth.

"We were just out there a little too long and just, when you have an opponent that puts a couple things together, it's important that you stop the bleeding," Lombardi said. "And we just didn't have opportunity to do that."
Notable: Bunker tied Jenna Lilley (2015-18) for fifth in career games played for Oregon with 236. … The Ducks are 10-5 this season in games played after a loss. … Oregon is now 4-9 this season against top-10 teams. … Assistant coach Nikki Ragin was ejected from the game following Luschar being called out for being out of the batter's box in the sixth inning.

Quotable:
Senior second baseman Allee Bunker on Oregon's defensive execution
"I think we pride ourselves on making the routine plays; I don't think we fully executed in that tonight. Great plays come once in a while. We had some great plays tonight. But I think it just comes down to making those routine plays."
Senior second baseman Allee Bunker on what OSU pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl did well
"I think just spotting the ball low; she throws hard and low. It was just trying to get our pitch; haven't seen her this year, so I think it was good to be able to see her. And you know, just take it one at-bat at a time and make adjustments one at-bat a time."
Up Next: Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday (3 p.m. PT, ESPN2)
