SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The 2022-23 season came to a close for the Oregon men's golf team on Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club.
The No. 19 Ducks shot a 19-over 299 in round three to finish in 27th place at plus-42 overall. The top 15 teams advanced to the final round of stroke play on Monday.
"We had a great year," head coach Casey Martin said. "It's tough cause you don't want to finish like that, but we had a great year and have nothing to be ashamed of. We just ran out of gas. We had a lot of adversity here this weekend, but that's alright. The kids are resilient, we'll be right back and we'll do it again next year. I'm really proud of them."
How it Happened: The Ducks struggled to get things going on Sunday, with a birdie from Owen Avrit on No. 9 the lone red square on the Ducks' scorecard in the first nine holes. Oregon found more success on the back nine with six birdies, but were unable to get hot enough to climb up the leaderboard.
Avrit was the top Duck on the day with a 3-over 73, counting towards the team score for the 36th time in 36 rounds this season. The senior made two birdies in seven holes to get to 1 over going to No. 18, but finished with a double bogey after finding the greenside bunker.
Redshirt freshman Gabriel Hari performed admirably in place of junior Greg Solhaug, who was forced to withdraw from Saturday's round due to injury. Hari came in with a 4-over 74, including birdies on No. 10 and No. 14.
Senior Nate Stember matched Hari with a 4-over 74, and sophomore Greyson Leach rounded out the counting scores with an 8-over 78.
What it Means: The Ducks came up short of their ultimate goal in Scottsdale, but put together a solid year in the 17th season under Martin. Oregon advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row and 32nd time in program history, and also claimed wins at the Bandon Dunes Championship and the Duck Invitational. The Ducks are staged to return their entire starting lineup from this season, including seniors Owen Avrit and Nate Stember who will take advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted from the COVID-19 pandemic. Avrit was a first-team all-Pac-12 selection with a stellar senior season that included wins at the Cal Poly Invitational and the Bandon Dunes Championship, and Stember was an all-Pac-12 second-team honoree and the individual champion at the Duck Invitational.
