Football Practice Recap: Aug. 5
08/05/23 | Football, @GoDucksMoseley
The Ducks practiced Saturday, after which head coach Dan Lanning met with media to discuss progress in camp and next year's move to the Big Ten.
The Oregon football team will have its first off day of this preseason camp Sunday, after the Ducks held their fourth workout of August on Saturday afternoon.
Practice saw the team in shells — with shoulder pads on, but not full pads — for the second day in a row. After a recovery day Sunday, the Ducks will be back in action Monday.
Following Saturday's practice, head coach Dan Lanning met with media. It was his first chance to field questions since the announcement Friday that Oregon will begin competition in the Big Ten Conference in the fall of 2024.
Some highlights from Lanning, with full video linked below …
On what he saw in practice Saturday: "We had the pads popping. We got to get some of that going the last two days, but it was really intense today. Tomorrow is really an off day for our guys, so it was pretty high strain today."
On what he means by seeing "strain" from the team: "To become great you've got to do hard things, and you've got to do hard things consistently. … It takes a level of intensity. That's what we're looking for on the field."
On the upcoming move next year to the Big Ten: "First off, our players are really excited about that. I think it's an exciting opportunity for us. When we talk about what we're looking for at this university, and the way that we recruit on a national level over multiple time zones, and playing against the best of the best, it's something that our guys are really really excited about. Obviously it's not really our focus right now; we've got an entire season to play."
On other positives about the move: "When you come here, you're looking for an opportunity to continue to compete against the best. I think there's no secret that there are really great teams and competition in that league. I think it's a league that means more than just football; I think academically it brings a certain prestige. The fact that it hits every part of the United States is big for us, because we are a team that is a national brand. We should be seen across the nation."
On freshmen who've been standing out so far: "It's probably a little early now to say that. Cole Martin is a guy who gets up here every single morning early and spends a lot of time on his craft. It's really showing up. Matayo (Uiagalelei) is a guy who has done that. Teitum Tuioti showed up with two really big plays yesterday. There's some guys on offense — Austin Novosad has made huge strides since the spring to now. There's a lot of guys who've stood out and a lot of guys who've put in the extra work."
