Ducks Sweep Season Opener
01/19/24 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team opened its 2024 spring season Friday with a 7-0 sweep over Portland State at the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks won their season opener for the third straight season, and sixth time in the last seven years, while improving their all-time record against the Vikings to 27-0. UO won two of three doubles matches and all six singles matches, with four coming in straight sets.
"We have a lot of new players. They have adjusted very well, and everyone fits well on the team," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "We have great chemistry and are excited to keep building with that."
Oregon clinched the doubles point in a tiebreak at third doubles, with Olivia Symons and Karin Young outlasting PSU's Scarlett Perkins and Elizabeth Strongina, 7-6 (1). The Ducks' top pair of Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral eased by Capu Sanoner and Nika Beukers, 6-0.

The Vikings earned a spilt of the first two doubles matches with Makoto Ohara and Momoko Yoshimura's 6-4 win over Jo-Yee Chan and Nina Geissler at No. 2 doubles.
Including the fall season, Luescher and Martinez Moral pushed their doubles record to 6-3 while Symons and Young played together for the first time.
Young extended UO's lead to 2-0 with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Perkins at the sixth spot in the lineup. Luescher was responsible for the third point of the day, coming away with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Strongina at the top position.
Martinez Moral sealed the win from the No. 4 position, earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ohara.
Despite the winner decided, the match was played out completely, allowing two newcomers and SEC transfers the chance to earn their first victories as a Duck. LSU transfer Nina Geissler defeated Beukers, 6-2, 6-4, on Court 2 while Tennessee transfer Symons came through with a third-set, 10-point tiebreaker win over Sanoner, 6-3, 5-7, 10-1.
Sophomore Jo-Yee Chan finished the day with a tiebreaking third set as well. Chan got by Yoshimura 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.

Oregon will now head to the ITA Kickoff Weekend, hosted by the nation's No. 1 team North Carolina. The Ducks will take on the Tar Heels on Friday at 11 a.m. PT.
"We are approaching every match as an opportunity to compete and get better and better," Nagle said. "It is going to be great to face a challenge with UNC, the number one team in the country, and see where we stack up."
