Cal Rallies in Second Half
01/21/24 | Women's Basketball
BERKELEY, Calif. — Oregon led by two at halftime, but California mounted a second-half comeback to deal the Ducks a 66-57 loss Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
Phillipina Kyei paced the Ducks with a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double, her Pac-12 leading 12th of the season. Chance Gray added 11 points and Grace VanSlooten finished with 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Despite Oregon outshooting the Golden Bears, 42 percent to 32 percent, Cal used 22 offensive rebounds to score 24 second-chance points. Additionally, the Bears forced 20 Duck turnovers in which they converted into 28 points. Cal finished with a plus-10 rebounding margin (45-35) and a plus-six turnover differential (20-14).
"The biggest disappointment of the night was our effort on the boards," said UO head coach Kelly Graves. "We gave them way too many second-chance points and lost some composure in the second half and made some silly turnovers. It's unfortunate, this one hurts. It was there for us to take."
The Ducks led for nearly 29 minutes, but the Bears took their first lead with 1:13 to play in the third quarter and outscored Oregon 19-9 in the fourth quarter. UO missed its last seven field goals and went scoreless over the game's final three and a half minutes.
Ioanna Krimili led all players with 24 points behind five made 3-pointers. Marta Suarez finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, as the duo accounted for 40 of Cal's 66 points.
How It Happened: The Ducks led for the entirety of the first half, building a lead as large six points at the end of the first quarter. Oregon shot 46 percent from the floor while limiting Cal to just 25 percent in taking a two-point lead at the half, 33-31.
Despite the shooting discrepancy, the Bears were able to keep it a one-possession game at the break behind a 28-17 rebounding edge, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds leading to 14 second-chance points.
Kyei scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the first half to go with seven rebounds to pace the Ducks in both categories. VanSlooten registered seven points and four assists while Gray added six points and a pair of rebounds.
Krimili had 14 of the Bears' 31 first-half points, going 4-of-9 from the floor (all 3-point attempts), while Martin had nine points and four boards.
Cal took its first lead with 1:13 to play in the third quarter on a Suarez layup, 47-46. Kyei's basket with seven second left in the frame reclaimed the lead for the Ducks, 48-47. In the quarter, UO committed eight turnovers that led to 10 Cal points.
The Bears outscored Oregon by 10 points in the fourth quarter, 19-9, and held UO to 3-of-14 shooting (21 percent). Cal scored 11 of its 19 points off seven Duck turnovers. McIntosh drained two 3-pointers in scoring six points and both Krimili and Suarez finished with five in the quarter.
