No. 2 Bruins Take Down Ducks
01/05/24 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES — Phillipina Kyei was the only player to score in double figures for Oregon Friday night, as the Ducks fell to No. 2 UCLA, 75-49, in Pac-12 action at Pauley Pavilion.
The Ducks and Bruins both shot 40 percent from the floor, but UCLA owned a 46-27 rebounding advantage which resulted in 32 more field goal attempts and 13 more made field goals. UCLA gobbled up 21 offensive boards and forced 20 UO turnovers, as the Bruins produced 28 points off turnovers and 13 second-chance points.
"Rebounds, that was it, and points off turnovers," said UO head coach Kelly Graves on the difference in the game. "Those were the two areas we talked about how we have to take care of the ball … Without Chance (Gray) today we were shorthanded and this is the one team you don't want to be shorthanded against."
Playing without their starting point guard in Chance Gray (injury), the Ducks' turnover total matched their season high while tallying 12 assists on 17 made field goals. Kyei led Oregon with 14 points and seven rebounds while Grace VanSlooten finished with nine points. Kennedy Basham added six points, six rebounds and two blocks.
"I thought we wasted a decent defensive effort," Graves added. "I thought we were pretty good tonight, this is a team that averages almost 90 points a game and we held them to 75 on their home floor. By in large, we did a pretty good job defensively on them, just a couple of letdowns here and there."
The Bruins entered the game second in the Pac-12 in scoring (88.9) and field goal percentage (49.9), but were held to their second-lowest point total of the season. UO held UCLA to 27 percent shooting in the first quarter and 35 percent in the final frame.
Angela Dugalic led four Bruins in double figures with 17 points. Lauren Betts turned in a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double in just over 15 minutes of action.
How It Happened: Both teams started the game slow offensively, as Oregon made one of its first seven field goals and UCLA started the game 3-for-15 from the field. The Bruins did grab 19 total rebounds to the Ducks' five, including 10 on the offensive end to take a 13-4 lead after the first quarter.
Basham and VanSlooten recorded the only baskets for UO in the first quarter, while Betts paced UCLA with five points in the frame. Oregon finished 2-for-12 to UCLA going 6-of-22 from the field.
Chamberlin hit a corner three to cap a 5-0 Oregon run in the second quarter, trimming the UCLA lead to 24-11 at the 4:36 mark. The Bruins responded with an 11-2 run, hitting all seven field goal attempts in that span and took a 37-17 lead into the half.
UCLA shot 56 percent in the second quarter, with Betts, Londynn Jones and Kiki Rice each recording six points in the quarter. Kyei had six of UO's 13 points in the second, going 3-for-3 from the floor. Chamberlin hit the team's only three of the half and had two assists at the break.
The Bruins owned a 28-9 rebounding edge to go with an 18-10 lead in points in the paint in the first half. Betts had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the first half.
UO scored seven straight points midway through the third, but the Bruins finished the quarter on an 8-0 run to push their lead to 61-34 after three. Kyei paced the Ducks with seven points and six rebounds while Sammie Wagner added four points.
Oregon outscored UCLA in the fourth, 15-14, with seven Ducks getting into the scoring column. Sofia Bell and Bella Hamel each hit a 3-pointer in the quarter.
