10/25/24 | Women's Volleyball
Mimi Colyer put down 20 kills and hit .500 to pace the Ducks to the homecoming weekend victory.
EUGENE, Ore. — The No. 11 Oregon volleyball team got its homecoming weekend started Friday night with a sweep of Maryland (25-21, 26-24, 25-17) at Matthew Knight Arena. Mimi Colyer tallied a match-high 20 kills and libero Mackenzie Morris led all players with 16 digs in the three-set victory. The Ducks move to 15-3 overall with a 7-2 mark in Big Ten play.
Colyer committed just two attack errors on 36 swings, good for a .500 hitting percentage. The Lincoln, Calif., native has now registered 16 or more kills in five-consecutive matches including a pair of 20-kill performances. Onye Ofoegue and Noemie Glover added nine and six kills, respectively.
For the eighth time this season fourth time against a conference opponent, the Ducks hit above .300 with Friday's .306 figure against the Terrapins. Cristin Cline recorded 32 assists, eight digs and an ace. Michelle Ohwobete and Maya De Los Reyes each had a pair of service aces.
How It Happened: Maryland (10-10, 1-8) charged out to an early 7-2 lead, an advantage it mirrored at 15-10 after an unsuccessful Oregon challenge. The home team reeled off the next four and pulled even at 17-17, the first tie since 1-all. Another four-point run by the Ducks, this time resulting in a 23-19 lead, proved to be the definitive move in the opening set.
On its second set point, Oregon took the 1-0 match lead when a Maryland served the ball long. Colyer racked up seven kills on 10 attacks in the first set.
The Ducks and Terrapins needed extra points to settle the second set. The visitors erased a trio of four-point deficits to pull even at 17-all before Oregon nudged ahead again, taking a 21-18 advantage with a kill from Colyer. Maryland answered with a five-point surge to take its first lead of the set at 23-21.
After a Terps' service error, the Ducks got back-to-back kills from Glover and Colyer to retake the lead and arrive at set point. Maryland tied things back at 24-24 but another service error gave the Ducks a second set point which Glover made stick with her fourth kill of the frame.
The visitors from College Park, Md., seemed to steady themselves with an early 4-1 lead in the third set but the Ducks responded with a nine-point surge. Morris served eight of the nine points. Cline picked up a second-contact kill to push the Oregon lead to 13-6 and force Maryland into a timeout. The lead never dipped below five the remainder of the match.
Colyer turned in another seven-kill set in the third and scored the Ducks' last four including the winning tally out of the back row. Oregon had just one attack error in the final set.
Sam Csire led Maryland with 10 kills and the Terrapins finished the match out-acing the Ducks, 8-6.
Notable: With nine digs, senior Daley McClellan reached 500 career digs … Friday's match was the first-ever meeting between Oregon and Maryland … Lauren Plum, the program's all-time assists leader, was recognized before the match before heading to the 2024 UO Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony … nearly 20 Oregon volleyball alum were in attendance for Friday's match.
Up Next: The Ducks host Rutgers on Sunday afternoon (1 p.m., B1G+).
