Oregon Trio In Striking Distance, Ducks Sit Third at The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate
10/28/24 | Men's Golf
CARMEL, Calif. – The Oregon men's golf team got out to a fast start in their final event of the fall and sit in third place as a team after the opening 36 holes of the Preserve Golf Club Collegiate. Eric Doyle led the Ducks on Monday, finishing the day at 5-under par after a 2-under 70 in round one and a second-round 69. The Ducks were one of only four teams to finish their rounds before play had to be halted due to daylight, so the second round of play will officially conclude tomorrow.
The Ducks opened play with an 8-under par 280 as a team and sat second on the leaderboard after 18 holes. After a 3-over 291 in the second round of the day, Oregon finds itself in third place, 13 strokes behind San Diego State. UCLA sits in second at 8-under, and Long Beach State sit just behind UO in fourth at 4-under.
SDSU's Chanachon Chokprajakchat and Colorado State's Jay Pabin lead the field at 6-under, just one stroke ahead of Doyle, heading into Tuesday's finale. Aiden Krafft and Jay Gould-Healy also are within range to make a run towards an individual medal in Tuesday's final round, sitting T9 and T14, respectively.
How It Happened
Doyle shot a 2-under 70 on the first 18 thanks to birdies on the par-4 ninth and the par-5 17th to go along with 16 pars. While he would par those two holes in his second round, birdies on No. 8 and 16 put him at 4-under for the tournament before his lone blunder of the day, a bogey on the par-4 first. Doyle responded well, adding another pair of birdies on his scorecard to climb six spots into a tie for third, just one stroke behind the leaders.
Gould-Healy put together a career round to start the event, carding a 5-under 67 in the opening round. Birdies on each of his first two holes set the tone for the round, and after a string og seven pars, he carded three more birdies in his next six holes. The 67 set a new career-low round and his 5-under finish marked his lowest round to par as a Duck. A second round 3-over 75 dropped him down the leaderboards, but Gould-Healy enters Tuesday's round T14.
Krafft sat at even par after 12 holes thanks to three birdies, three bogeys and six pars, but he finished the first round strong with three birdies in his final five holes to card a 3-under 69. He tallied five more birdies in the second round, finishing even par thanks to three bogeys and a double. Krafft sits in a tie for ninth heading into Tuesday and will look to claim his second top-10 finish of the fall.
Greyson Leach posted nine birdies across both rounds, finishing 74-75 to sit T46. Jeffrey Kwak rounded out the lineup, going 76-75 with six birdies of his own. Kyreece Romero, competing as an individual, was the lone Duck to not get all 36 holes in on Tuesday. After a first round 80, Romero posted a flawless scorecard through 14 holes in round two with three birdies and is tied with Leach at 5-over. He will wrap up his second round when play resumes Tuesday morning.
