11/15/24 | Women's Volleyball
No. 11 Oregon (19-5, 11-4 B1G) had 14.0 total team blocks in the win over Northwestern.
EUGENE, Ore. — Senior outside hitter Michelle Ohwobete put down a season-high 20 kills and the No. 11 Oregon volleyball team had 14.0 total team blocks in Friday's four-set win over Northwestern. With the victory, the Ducks improved to 19-5 overall with an 11-4 mark in Big Ten play.
Oregon saved a set point in the third to avoid a 2-1 match deficit before coming away with the 25-15, 22-25, 27-25, 25-20 result.
Ohwobete hit .415 against the visiting Wildcats, committing just three attack errors on 41 swings. She was joined in double figures by Mimi Colyer and Noemie Glover who had 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Redshirt freshman Cristin Cline set the team to a .273 hitting percentage while posting a 51-assist, 12-dig double-double, her third of the year.
Defensively, senior libero Mackenzie Morris picked up a match-high 19 digs and threatened the 2,000 career number. She came into the Northwestern match needing 21 digs to reach the milestone. Colyer and Isabel Patterson each had nine digs.
Friday's showing at the net marked the 10th time the Ducks had double-digit blocks this season. In the middle, Onye Ofoegbu and Colby Neal registered seven and six blocks, respectively. Ofoegbu also had eight kills in the match. The Ducks held Northwestern to a .158 efficiency.
How It Happened: Oregon hit .314 and sided out at 80 percent in the first set but Northwestern (5-18, 3-12) evened the match with a late rally in the second. The Ducks took a 20-18 lead to force a timeout but the Wildcats ended the set on a 7-2 run, capping the surge with a kill by Buse Hazan.
Hazan finished the match with a team-high 12 kills.
In a near mirror image of set two, the home team led 21-19 to force Northwestern into a timeout. The Ducks extended the lead to 22-19 out of the huddle with an Ohwobete kill. However, the Wildcats won five of the next six points and had set point at 24-23 after an ace fell between Oregon players.
Oregon responded with another kill by Ohwobete and a solo block by Neal to arrive at a set point of its own, 25-24. Northwestern fought off the set point but Colyer answered with a kill, and on a second set point, Glover and Ofoegbu teamed up for a block and the 2-1 match lead.
The Ducks carried the momentum into the fourth, jumping out to leads of 7-1 and 12-5, both of which led to Northwestern timeouts. The visitors steadily began to chip away and pulled to within three with Oregon leading 22-19. The Ducks quickly scored the next two points and on match point number two, Glover registered the final tally with her 11th kill of the night.
Up Next: Oregon travels to Los Angeles for Sunday's top-25 matchup with No. 23 USC (1 p.m., B1G+).
