Buzzer-Beater Hands UO Men First Defeat
12/08/24 | Men's Basketball
Oregon rallied to take the lead with 10 seconds left Sunday, but UCLA scored in the final second to win.
EUGENE, Ore. — It took a banked three-pointer in the final second for Oregon men's basketball to suffer its first loss of the season.
Off to a perfect start through nine games, the No. 12 Ducks were finally defeated Sunday when UCLA banked in a three-pointer to win at Matthew Knight Arena, 73-71. After trailing most of the second half, the UO men took a 71-70 lead on a three-pointer by Jackson Shelstad with 10 seconds left, but the Bruins answered at the other end.
Oregon (9-1) has engineered multiple late comebacks already this season, and Sunday looked like it would be the latest when Shelstad's shot dropped. The Ducks then played a nearly flawless final defensive possession, only to have Dylan Andrews bank in the game-winning three with 0.4 seconds left.
"We do have a sense as a team we can win any game," said Keeshawn Barthelemy, whose three-pointer with 2:32 left sparked Oregon's comeback from a 68-61 deficit to lead on Shelstad's three. "I don't know what we have to do to start games better or be better in the first half, but today it bit us in the behind a little bit."

Nate Bittle led the Ducks with 22 points and 10 rebounds Sunday, and Barthelemy scored 13. Shelstad had 11 points and Jadrian Tracey added 10, though the starting backcourt tandem of TJ Bamba and Ra'Heim Moss went scoreless.
The Ducks trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, and then by nine at 67-58 with 3:51 left in the game. Postgame, UO coach Dana Altman was lamenting Oregon's 13 turnovers that led to 16 points for UCLA, and some offensive rebounds that extended possessions for the Bruins.
"Everybody's gonna look at the last couple minutes," Altman said. "But we had bad turnovers, and their offensive rebounds to get a lead there really made a difference. … I thought those were as impactful as anything in the game."
How It Happened: Bittle scored six straight points to give Oregon an early 6-5 lead, and he scored again a few minutes later to get the Ducks within 14-11. It was 18-11 when Barthelemy hit a jumper to cut the deficit, but he was whistled for a technical foul after the play for talking to the UCLA bench, and the Bruins made both free throws. They followed with a three-pointer to lead 23-13.
"I'm too old for making mistakes like that," Barthelemy said. "That cost us a couple points, in a two-point game."
His teammates had his back, with Bittle and Shelstad each hitting a pair of threes during a 16-4 run that gave Oregon the lead just before halftime. The Ducks took a 34-33 lead into the break.
Oregon still led by one early in the second, 45-44, when UCLA scored seven straight to pull in front. It was tied again at 56-56 when the Bruins used an 11-2 run to go up 67-58 with 3:51 to play. When it was 68-61, Bittle missed the front end of a one-and-one, but the ball ended up in Barthelemy's hands and he drilled a three to spark Oregon's comeback.

With UCLA up 70-66, Barthelemy blocked a dunk at one end then missed a three at the other — but this time Bittle collected his miss and put it back. A steal by Bittle with 18 seconds left set up Shelstad to make the go-ahead three with 10 seconds to play, but Andrews broke the Ducks' hearts just before the buzzer.
"It was a great defensive set by us; he just hit a tough shot," Barthelemy said. "… But the whole night? That's a different story. We've got a lot to work on."
Up Next: The Ducks have a break for final exams before returning to action at home against Stephen F. Austin on Sunday (3 p.m., Big Ten Network).
