Ducks Bounce Back In Second Round
02/20/24 | Men's Golf
LA QUINTA, Calif. – The No. 22 Oregon men's golf team bounced back from a difficult opening round by carding 7 under in the second round of The Prestige and rising eight spots up the leaderboard on Tuesday afternoon.
The Ducks entered the day tied for 23rd in the field but responded by shooting a collective 277, a 16-stroke improvement upon its round-one score. Leading the way was Hugh Adams, Owen Avrit and Aiden Krafft who each shot a 3-under 68 to push the Ducks into a tie for 15th overall.
How It Happened
Adams turned in the best round of his young Oregon career as the freshman fired three birdies with zero bogeys across his first 10 holes. A lone bogey on hole two was quickly erased with a birdie on three as Adams carded a 68, leading all Ducks at even par overall.
Avrit found himself behind early as the fifth-year senior was 2 over through five, but sank four birdies in five holes to quickly change the tune of his round. With no bogeys across his final 14 holes of the day, Avrit finished the round 3 under and moved into a tie for 48th on the leaderboard at 1 over for the tournament.
Krafft played steady golf to start the day, going bogey-free with two birdies across his first nine holes. Bogeys on holes one and three presented a setback, but Krafft responded by firing three birdies in his final five holes to improve to 3 over for the tournament.
Nate Stember entered the day as the Ducks' leader, but a 2-over second round dropped him to 1 over overall, now tied with Avrit for 48th on the leaderboard. It was just the second round in his last 13 in which Stember finished above par, and just the third such round this season.
Oregon enters the final day of play at 2 over overall, tied for 15th with Northwestern.
