Oregon Men Surge in Final Round of The Goodwin
03/30/24 | Men's Golf
SAN FRANCISCO – Led by scores of 68 from Nate Stember and Greyson Leach, the No. 24 Oregon men's golf team surged to a 3-under final round at The Goodwin on Saturday at TPC Harding Park.
Playing their sixth round in as many days, the Ducks shot their best round of the tournament to jump up to a 10th place finish at 14 over overall. Greg Solhaug was UO's most consistent performer this weekend as the senior shot three-straight rounds of 71, leading the Ducks at 3 over and finishing tied 33rd. Stember and Leach had the hot hands for Oregon on Saturday, shooting 2 under on the final day and finishing in a tie for 46th at 5 over for the tournament. Also finishing 5 over was Owen Avrit, who used five birdies to card even par in his final round.
"We had a great start today," head coach Casey Martin said. "It was good to see the guys come out and make some birdies. We let it slip a bit, but overall it was a good day."
How It Happened
Leach came out of the gates firing as he sank four birdies in his first five holes of play. The junior sat at four under for the majority of his round, but back-to-back bogeys on holes six and seven slowed his progress and resulted in a 2-under finish for the day. Stember played steady through the duration of the round, playing 18 holes of bogey-free golf with birdies on holes nine and 16 to match Leach at 2 under.
Avrit played a great first nine holes, logging back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15 to go with seven pars. Two birdies in his first three holes after the turn brought him to 4 under, but a slip up on hole six cost him a few strokes as he finished the day even par. Avrit, Leach and Stember each finished the tournament at 5 over, tying for 46th overall.
Solhaug opened the day with two birdies and six pars through his first eight holes, but bogeys on two of his next three holes brought him back to even for the day. The senior sank a birdie on hole four, but fell victim to a double bogey on the final hole of the day to secure his third-straight round of 71. Solhaug ended the tournament as Oregon's top finisher, sitting tied for 33rd at 3 over.
After bogeying the first hole of the day, Aiden Krafft responded with birdies on holes 14 and 15 to pull back below par, but three bogeys on his remaining holes left him to a 2-over finish. Krafft ended the tournament tied for 60th at 7 over.
Oregon entered the final round in a tie for 12th at 17 over and rose up to 10th in a field featuring 31 teams after shooting its best round of the tournament on Saturday.
