Dominant Ducks Earn First Pac-12 Win
03/30/24 | Women's Lacrosse
Oregon scored the first eight goals Saturday on the way to a 17-7 victory over UC Davis at Papé Field.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon exploded for 10 goals in the opening period and held UC Davis to half its season scoring average as the UO women's lacrosse team beat the Aggies on Saturday at Papé Field, 17-7.
Coming off two losses to open Pac-12 play that followed a 6-1 nonconference record, the Ducks gave first-year head coach Jessica Drummond her first conference win at the helm of the program. Oregon's 17 goals were the program's most against a Pac-12 opponent since 2018.
"We had a fantastic week of prep; they were locked in, every practice, every day," Drummond said. "So I felt really good going into today's game."

The Ducks (7-3, 1-2 Pac-12) carried over their solid week of practice right from the opening draw Saturday, scoring the first eight goals of the afternoon and leading 10-1 after one quarter. Morgan McCarthy and Haley Cummins each had a hat trick, and Lauren Rismani dished out three assists while also being one of five Ducks who scored twice.
"I just think that our dodges looked really great, and we had really good shots," Rismani said. "I'm just really proud of this team, just coming back and working hard."
How It Happened: Oregon's first six goals were by six different players — Anna Simmons, Rismani, Cummins, Rachel Pallo, Gabby Santucci and McCarthy. Cummins made it 7-0 with 4:19 still to play in the opening quarter, and soon after Riley Taylor made it eight straight goals by Oregon to open the game.

UC Davis goalkeeper Ashley Laing came into the day leading the Pac-12 in save percentage at 47.5 percent, but the Ducks put 10 shots past her to lead 10-1 after one quarter.
"It was amazing," Rismani said. "And we just wanted to keep feeling that feeling, just keep going."
After the Aggies scored first in the second quarter, the Ducks got goals from Taylor and Alex Matsuoka to lead 12-2 at halftime. McCarthy scored twice in the third and Matsuoka added her second goal, while both Pallo and Cummins scored again in the fourth.

Thayer Hubbard started in goal for the Ducks, and Cassidy Eckert played the second half. Each had three saves, while Lexie Likins collected three of Oregon's 12 ground balls and Simmons had two of the Ducks' eight caused turnovers.
"The defense is so locked in, and I just love how aggressive we stayed," Drummond said. "I know that sometimes we get fouls, and that to me is OK as long as we're finding ways to get the ball back — which we did a great job. And our goalies played well."
Up Next: The Ducks host USC next Saturday at noon.
