SAN DIEGO — Oregon lacrosse fought back to tie the score twice in the fourth quarter but ultimately suffered a 13-12 loss against San Diego State on the road on Saturday.
After leading 8-6 at halftime, the Ducks (7-5, 1-4 Pac-12) fell behind 9-8 early in the third quarter after the Aztecs (2-12, 1-4 Pac-12) scored three-straight out of the locker room. Oregon tied the score on three-separate occasions, including a goal from Katie Collins to draw even with 7:55 remaining in the game, but San Diego State punched in a final goal with under four minutes to play that ultimately put an end to the Ducks' chances.
11 cards plagued Oregon as they enabled San Diego State to score four woman-up goals, including two in the fourth quarter. The Ducks outshot the Aztecs 30-27 and put 23 shots on frame but were bested 17-10 in draw controls.
How it Happened: Oregon got off to a hot start as they scored six goals in the opening quarter to take an early lead over the Aztecs. Two goals in the opening 11 minutes from Morgan McCarthy led the way as the Ducks scored three-straight goals to close out the quarter and build a 6-2 advantage.
The two teams traded goals across the first eight minutes of the second quarter, but San Diego State gained some footing and scored twice before the halftime whistle to cut into Oregon's lead, 8-6. The Aztecs began to take control of the game in the third quarter, scoring the first three goals out of halftime to flip the script and claim a 9-8 lead. Jenae Sperling got loose for a goal to break a 13-minute dry spell for Oregon and tie things back up, but the Aztec's Tatum Neach scored in response as the home team took a one-goal lead into the fourth.
San Diego State scored the first goal of the quarter just 33 seconds in, but back-to-back goals from Rachel Pallo and McCarthy kept Oregon in the game. Following the McCarthy goal at the 12:48 mark, the Ducks were given a yellow card on the ensuing SDSU possession that afforded a woman-up opportunity to the Aztecs. San Diego State took advantage of the opportunity to score and stop Oregon's momentum, taking a 12-11 lead with under 12 minutes to play. Several minutes passed between goals, but with 7:55 on the clock Collins took the ball on the left side of the eight-meter arc and dodged several defenders on her way to an equalizer.
With under four minutes remaining in the game San Diego State drew a foul inside the arc, setting up a free-position attempt from the center hash that the Aztecs converted to take a lead. Oregon goalkeeper Cassidy Eckert denied another free-position attempt a few minutes later to keep the Ducks in the fight, but savvy clock management by San Diego State limited the Oregon chances as the clock hit zero.
Notable: McCarthy scored her eighth hat trick of the season…McCarthy is five goals away from moving inside the Pac-12's top 10 all-time leading goalscorers…Eckert made her third start of the season and first since facing Marist on Feb. 25…Eckert logged a season-high eight saves…Lauren Rismani logged a point for the 16th-straight game dating back to last season.
Up Next: Oregon will play at Papé Field for the final time this season next Saturday when it hosts Arizona State at 12 p.m. PT.
