Series On The Line For Senior Day

Oregon will look to win its series with Oregon State while honoring nine seniors Sunday, after dropping game two Saturday.
EUGENE, Ore. — All season long, Oregon has approached Pac-12 Conference weekends like they're NCAA Super Regionals, in which the winner has to take two out of three. That's best accomplished in the first two games, of course, but if not then win the finale.
That mentality will be useful Sunday, when the Ducks look to clinch their series with Oregon State after missing out on a chance to sweep with a 3-0 loss Saturday before a season-high 2,207 fans in Jane Sanders Stadium. Sunday will be Senior Day for Oregon, with nine seniors to be recognized after the series finale is played at 4 p.m.
"What's good is, we got the driver's seat game," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said Saturday, referring to Friday's 11-3 win in the series opener. "Then it's about getting game two; with us not getting game two, to me the team that wants it the most — that's going to do what it takes — is the team that's going to get it."
How It Happened: The Ducks struggled to string together hits against OSU pitcher Logan Hulon, who went the distance for the shutout. Alyssa Daniell singled to lead off the second and Tehya Bird did likewise in the third, but Oregon was unable to move them into scoring position.
The Ducks' best chance came in the fourth. Emma Kauf singled with one out, and then with two out Vallery Wong was hit by a pitch and KK Humphreys walked to load the bases. That brought up freshman Katie Flannery, who flied out to end the threat.
"We needed to do more" against Hulon, Lombardi said. "She's a good pitcher, but I believe in this lineup. We needed to be able to adjust better than we did tonight. …
"We usually do a good job of adjusting quickly, and it took too long to adjust tonight. We had some key opportunities and missed on them."
Even so, the game remained scoreless through four innings, as UO pitcher Elise Sokolsky had faced the minimum to that point. That changed in the fifth; Oregon State put two on with consecutive one-out infield singles, and after both runners moved up on an out, a pinch-hit single brought both home.
That two-run single was about the only hard-hit ball of the day off Sokolsky.
"I thought Elise threw great," Lombardi said. "I thought she gave us an opportunity to win. I thought she threw really, really well."
The Beavers added an unearned run in the seventh. Sokolsky allowed the two earned runs on four hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts.
"We win as a team, we lose as a team," Sokolsky said. "… If it would have been a win, great. It was a loss, (so we) come back tomorrow."
