01/27/25 | Track and Field
The Gothenburg, Sweden, native ran an NCAA-leading time of 4:25.89 in the mile Saturday.
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon junior Wilma Nielsen has been named M-F Athletic Division I Women's National Athlete of the Week as announced by the USTFCCCA Monday afternoon. Nielsen broke the UO record in the mile and became the third-fastest performer in collegiate history with her time of 4:25.89 at the Dr. Sander Scorcher at The Armory.
With Saturday's effort, Nielsen is the first Oregon woman to dip below 4:30 and lowers her indoor best by more than six seconds. She carried a previous best of 4:31.94 from the BU Danville Season Opener in early December.
The Gothenburg, Sweden, native has also moved to second on her native country's all-time indoor mile list. Nielsen currently ranks No. 1 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the world this year.
Nielsen is the third UO woman to win National Athlete of the Week during the indoor campaign, joining Raevyn Rogers (2016, '17) and Jorinde Van Klinken (2023).
The Ducks are back in action this coming weekend at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. The meet begins Friday morning with heptathlon and pentathlon.
