Ducks Run Away With Season Opener
11/03/25 | Women's Basketball
Ducks finish with 24 steals while forcing 32 turnovers in season-opening victory.
EUGENE, Ore. — The 2025-26 edition of the Oregon women's basketball team showcased its depth, speed and defensive tenacity in a resounding 100-59 victory over West Georgia in the season opener at Matthew Knight Arena.

Five Ducks scored in double figures, and all 13 players who saw action made at least one field goal, but it was a swarming and stifling defense from the opening tip that keyed their high-tempo victory.

"We're going to have to create some stuff off our defense, and that got us out and going," head coach Kelly Graves said. "To me the highlight was everybody got in and [everyone] scored. They got in and did what they do, and we can build on it."
On a night where the Ducks shot just 10-of-36 from the 3-point line, the UO defense forced 32 UWG turnovers behind 24 steals, including 16 steals in the opening half, to help the offense get easy looks and build a 35-point halftime lead.

Transfer forward Mia Jacobs carded a team-high 16 points to go with six rebounds in her official UO debut. Elisa Mevius added 15 points to go with three steals, and Sarah Rambus pitched in 13 points. Eleven players recorded at least one steal, led by four from Ari Long.

Sophomore Katie Fiso continued her development as the team's lead guard, handing out 10 assists to pair with her 10 points while not committing a single turnover. Fiso set career highs in assists and steals (3) in logging the first double-double of her young career.

"I feel like we came out and pushed the pace like we always do," said Fiso. "I thought we spaced the floor well. Our defense was pretty solid today."

How It Happened: The Ducks shot 50 percent from the floor in the first quarter and turned 11 West Georgia turnovers into 14 points. A 10-0 run midway through the quarter pushed Oregon's lead from three to 13 – a run that included field goals from five different Ducks. Seven players got into the scoring column in the first 10 minutes for Oregon, led by six points from Fiso.

UO's defense continued to put the clamps on the Wolves in the second quarter, allowing UWG to three points while forcing 10 more turnovers. The Ducks closed the half by scoring the final 19 points of the half to open up a 48-13 lead at the break.

Mevius led the way with nine points while Sofia Bell, Fiso and Jacobs each contributed eight points. Jacobs and Ehis Etute each hauled in a team-leading five boards. Oregon recorded 16 steals, creating 28 points off 21 forced turnovers in the half. Conversely, UO turned the ball over just twice while tallying 11 assists.

Jacobs got going the third quarter, hitting 3-of-5 shots from the floor to lead the team with six points. Rambus added five points on 2-of-3 shooting, while Oregon forced 10 more turnovers in the third. Scoring runs of seven and six points stretched the lead out to as many as 41, which is how many the Ducks led by after three quarters.

"A little nervous to start, as you saw," Jacobs said. "It was good, got on a little roll at the end so that was nice."

Oregon scored the first six points of the fourth quarter for its largest lead of the night, 77-30. Freshman Sara Barhoum knocked down a couple of long triples for her first collegiate baskets, while fellow freshman Janiyah Williams scored three in the fourth as part of her seven-point night.

"I'm proud of them," Fiso said of the two UO freshmen. "I know what it's like to be a freshman and going through it. So I'm just proud of them for showing up every day, coming with a sense of energy, sense of joy."

The Ducks ended up forcing 32 UWG turnovers, which translated into 41 UO points. Oregon registered 30 assists on 43 made buckets while turning the ball over just six times on the night, helping the Ducks to their 13th consecutive opening-day win.
Up Next: The Ducks continue their homestand on Saturday against Montana (2 p.m., B1G+).
