Ducks Drop Big Ten Opener at No. 4 UCLA
12/07/25 | Women's Basketball
UO falls to Bruins, 80-59, on Sunday.
LOS ANGELES – The Oregon women's basketball team outscored fourth-ranked UCLA in the second half on Sunday, but the Bruins used a strong first half to come away with an 80-59 victory in the Big Ten opener for both teams at Pauley Pavilion.
Oregon (10-1, 0-1) suffered its first loss of the season after beginning a season 10-0 or better for just the third time in program history. The Ducks outscored the Bruins 33-31 in the second half, but trailed by 23 at the half.
"We're disappointed," said head coach Kelly Graves. "We didn't play well enough in the first half. I liked our effort and execution, we were much better in the second half. You just can't dig that kind of a hole against that kind of [team]."
Ehis Etute came off the bench to score 14 points and haul in a team-leading nine rebounds. Sophomore Katie Fiso matched Etute's 14 points and gave out seven assists while senior Mia Jacobs added 11 points, as she surpassed 1,500 points for her career.
"Ehis came in and did a great job today," Graves said of Etute, who was listed as questionable but did not play Wednesday against Oregon State due to an ankle injury. "She hasn't practiced much this entire week, she battled.
"She is a really good player. She's super strong and aggressive, and I think we're just scratching the surface of how good she can be."
UCLA shot 49 percent while holding a 31-10 rebounding edge in the first half. UCLA center Lauren Betts had 13 points and 11 boards in the half and finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Bruins.
How It Happened: The Ducks dug themselves an early 10-point hole after missing their first six shots from the floor, while UCLA hit three consecutive buckets in taking an 11-1 lead. Etute converted an and-1 for UO's first basket of the day, and trimmed the deficit to five points after a second bucket on the next trip down the floor. UCLA stretched its lead to 11 by scoring eight of the final 10 points of the quarter to take a 19-8 lead after 10 minutes.
After going 3-for-18 from the field in the first, UO made just one of its first six field goals in the second quarter. UCLA's run hit 10 unanswered points to lead 29-10 with just under 6:30 left in the half. From there, neither side was able to put together more than five consecutive points. Fiso knocked down a pair of free throws with under a second remaining to put the halftime score at 49-26 in favor of the Bruins.
Etute led Oregon with six points while grabbing three rebounds. Fiso and Sarah Rambus each added four points while eight Ducks got into the scoring column in the first half. UCLA shot 49 percent from the floor in the half while UO managed a field goal percentage of just 29 percent. The Bruins owned a 31-10 rebounding edge, collecting 11 offensive boards, to build a 26-10 advantage in points in the paint.
The Ducks held UCLA scoreless over a three-minute stretch in the third quarter, where they were able to score seven straight points, getting a 3-pointer from Sofia Bell and layups from Ari Long and Fiso to chip away at the deficit. Etute scored four in the quarter while grabbing five rebounds while UO trailed 65-40 through 30 minutes.
UO tallied the first four points of the fourth quarter and closed the game by scoring seven of the final nine, outscoring the Bruins 19-15 in the fourth. Fiso accounted for eight points while Etute scored four in the fourth.
"It just shows that we can play with them" Graves said of his team's second-half performance. "There aren't many people going to come in and beat these guys here."
Notable: Etute was not listed on the injury report after being listed as questionable Wednesday against Oregon State … This was the first ranked opponent the Ducks have faced this season … The Ducks are 36-45 all-time against the Bruins … Fiso left the game early in the first quarter after getting shaken up, but returned to the game later in the same quarter … Jacobs went over 1,500 points for her career in the game.
Up Next: The Ducks return home to host Montana State on Sunday (12 p.m., B1G+).
