Pitching Anchors Two Wins on Friday
02/21/25 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – No. 19 Oregon's pitching staff gave up just two runs on Friday while striking out 17 batters over 14 innings as the Ducks defeated Utah, 2-0, and No. 25 San Diego State, 7-2, on the second day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Oregon won its eighth and ninth games in a row to improve to 14-1.
Lyndsey Grein allowed just one hit over 5.0 innings in relief against Utah to run her record to 8-0. Elise Sokolsky started against SDSU and struck out six in 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on two hits, to improve to 3-0.
"I just think we feed off of each other really well so it's easy to go out there and do what you have to do," said Sokolsky. "I think it's just awesome to have a staff where you can rely on anyone at any given moment."
On the offensive side, Katie Flannery and Rylee McCoy homered against the Utes, while the bottom third of the lineup knocked in five runs against the Aztecs.

How It Happened: - Game 1 (Oregon 2, Utah 0): Grein was masterful in relief of Taylour Spencer as the two pitchers combined for Oregon's third shutout in five games.
Flannery got the Ducks on the board with a solo shot to straightaway center in the top of the second. It was her second home run of the season.
An inning later, McCoy doubled Oregon's lead to 2-0 with a home run to left center. It was her second home run in as many days and her fifth of the season. But that was it for the offense as the Ducks left nine runners on base.
Thanks to Spencer and Grein, it didn't matter. Spencer started and retired the first six batters she faced but ran into trouble in the third, giving up a walk and a double to lead off the inning. Grein, who was spectacular in relief during Thursday's 1-0 win over No. 5 Tennessee, was called out of the pen and struck out two batters to keep the shutout intact.
Grein retired 14 of the 16 Utes she faced. The only runner to reach base against her was Kaylah Nelson, who singled in the fourth, and then was safe at first in the seventh on an error. Nelson was picked off by catcher Emma Cox in the fifth and was left stranded at first in the last inning.
Grein struck out six batters and didn't walk any. She sat the side down in order in the fifth and sixth innings.
How It Happened: - Game 2 (Oregon 7, San Diego State 2): The bottom third of Oregon's lineup – Kedre Luschar, Paige Sinicki and Kaylynn Jones – drove in five of the Ducks' seven runs to back a solid start by Sokolsky.
The bottom three in the lineup played a big role in Oregon's five-run second inning.
McCoy led off with a double and went to third on Stefini Ma'ake's single. An out later, Luschar dropped down a bunt single that squeezed McCoy home from third. Sinicki then singled to drive in Ma'ake before Luschar scored on a throwing error on the center fielder. Jones followed with an RBI groundout that plated Sinicki to make it 4-0.
The top of the order then stole a run for the Ducks. Kai Luschar doubled into left center and Dezianna Patmon reached on a bunt single that advanced Kai Luschar to third. On the next pitch, Patmon broke for second and intentionally got into a rundown that allowed Kai Luschar to score Oregon's fifth run of the inning.
The Aztecs (8-3) scored a run in the bottom of the second to make it 5-1, but Oregon answered with a run in the top of the fifth.
McCoy led off with a double and advanced to third on an error. Kedre Luschar singled into center field to drive in her second run of the game.
Patmon's sixth inning home run – her third of the season – capped the scoring for the Ducks.

Notable: The Ducks' 14-1 start is the program's best since going 24-1 to open the 2021 season … Grein threw the final 1.2 innings against SDSU and did not give up a run. She has not allowed an earned run in her last six appearances (16.2 innings) … Kedre Luschar and McCoy both went 4-for-7 on Friday, while Patmon was 3-for-6 … Melyssa Lombardi is now one win away from becoming the third Oregon coach to reach 200 career wins … Oregon added one more steal to its season total and now leads the NCAA with 60 … Paige Sinicki made her 143rd and 144th consecutive starts at shortstop … The win against SDSU was the Ducks' eighth straight against the Aztecs … Former Duck Katelyn Howard (2019-23) is now Utah's director of operations.
Quotable:
Pitcher Lyndsey Grein on the pitching staff
"We feed off of each other. It feels pretty good. Elise was working super hard out there and do was Taylour (Spencer) so I take that responsibility on to keep that momentum moving forward because that's the vibe they created."
Up Next: Oregon concludes the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a matchup against No. 22 Missouri Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
