Ducks Win Pair To Open Oregon Classic

No. 14 Oregon extended its win streak to 12 games Friday, and hosts two games again Saturday at Jane Sanders Stadium.
The Ducks opened the three-day Oregon Classic at The Jane with a pair of wins Friday, each in different fashion. After coming from behind to win the opener over San Diego, 9-5, they dominated from start to finish in a walk-off 9-1 win in six innings over Portland State.
"Even if we're down, we're never out," said UO outfielder Kedre Luschar, who had five hits and drove in three runs across the two games. "And when we're on top, stay on top."
Oregon improved to 17-1 on the season despite the absence of head coach Melyssa Lombardi, who is away from the team for the weekend attending to a personal matter. Associate head coach Sam Marder led the team effort to sustain the Ducks' impressive start to this season despite the absence of their head coach.
"Coach Lombardi really does a great job of empowering her staff in general," Marder said. "We all feel really comfortable to operate without her here; obviously we want to have her here — we're our best when she's here — but we all feel we can operate without her, and that's a testament to her."

Friday was the opening day of consecutive weekends of home tournaments for Oregon, which will host the Jane Sanders Classic the following weekend. The Ducks continue the Oregon Classic on Saturday with a rematch against San Diego and then a matchup with Loyola Chicago.
"We all missed this field," Luschar said. "It's always nice being at home. It was awesome."
How It Happened (Game 1) — Oregon 9, San Diego 5: Friday's game was the home debut for a talented freshman class that repeatedly grabbed the spotlight over the first three weeks of the season. The first inning of the home opener featured highs and lows for the class, with catcher Emma Cox taking a foul ball to the chest in the top of the first that sidelined her for the rest of the day, but reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week Rylee McCoy jump-starting Oregon's offense.
After a 1-2-3 inning in the circle for UO starter Elise Sokolsky to open the game, Kai Luschar singled and stole second to lead off the bottom of the first. Dezianna Patmon reached on an error that advanced Luschar before also stealing second, and McCoy made it 2-0 with a two-strike single the opposite way through the right side of the infield. An RBI single by Kedre Luschar later in the inning made it 3-0.
That remained the score until the top of the fifth, when some uncharacteristic miscues by the Ducks opened the door for San Diego. An error, a passed ball and a wild pitch all contributed to a five-run inning that put Oregon in a 5-3 hole. But the Ducks responded with their own five-run fifth inning, fueled by three walks, an error and a wild pitch.
"It's good for us to be tested in that kind of way," Marder said. "For them to keep their composure, come back in the game and put up runs, I was really proud of how they responded."
Up 8-5 entering the six, the Ducks tacked on an insurance run when Katie Flannery tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Lyndsey Grein improved to 10-0 on the season by getting the last eight outs in the circle, after taking over during the big fifth inning, limiting the damage as much as possible and then throwing a pair of 1-2-3 innings.

How It Happened (Game 2) — Oregon 9, Portland State 1: The Ducks scored quickly again in the second game of the day, and kept their foot on the gas. Patmon walked with one out in the first, moved up two bases on a hit by pitch and a single, then scored on a fielder's choice.
Kedre Luschar led off the second with a double and took third on an error, then scored on a line out by Braiesey Rosa, who took over behind the plate following the injury to Cox in the opener and caught all 13 innings. Kaylynn Jones followed Rosa to the plate, walked and stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice. Patmon then followed with a homer for a 4-0 lead.
The Viks scored off UO starter Taylour Spencer (2-1) in the third, but the Ducks again answered quickly. Paige Sinicki singled to open the bottom half, stole second and scored on a single by Flannery. McCoy made it 6-1 in the fourth with her first career homer at Jane Sanders Stadium.

"I've hit a couple home runs so far this season," she said, "but that was by far one of my favorites."
Later in the fourth, Kedre Luschar doubled in two runs for an 8-1 lead. The Ducks needed to score once more for a run-rule win, and they got it in the sixth — McCoy led off with a single, Stefini Ma'ake doubled to put pinch-runner Presley Lawton at third, and Flannery came through with a one-out RBI single for the walk-off win.
Notable: Spencer struck out a career-high eight in her first career complete game. … McCoy took over the team lead in homers with eight, breaking a tie with Ma'ake. … Oregon's 12-game win streak is the program's longest since a 14-game streak in 2021.
Up Next: The Ducks host San Diego on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and Loyola Chicago at 6 p.m., with both games streamed on B1G+.
