Ducks Winning Streak Ends at 11
03/11/25 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. — Starting pitcher Ian Umlandt gave No. 9 Oregon a quality start but the Ducks' offense struggle most of the game allowing Grand Canyon to escape with a 4-2 nonconference win on Wednesday night at PK Park.
Umlandt held the Antelopes scoreless through six innings but GCU rallied with three runs in the seventh to take the lead. Oregon threatened in the eighth, but a little bad luck led to the Ducks only scoring one run in the inning.
How It Happened: Mason Neville wasted no time putting Oregon on top lining the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning over the left-center field wall.
The Ducks (14-3) had a number of opportunities to add to the lead. The Ducks stranded 11 runner on base in the game, including seven in scoring position, while also having a runner thrown out at the plate.
Oregon left three runners in scoring position combined in the second and third innings, while also leaving a pair in scoring position in the eighth and one at second in the seventh.
Grand Canyon (12-4) finally got to Umlandt in the seventh inning. Carson Ohland led off the framed with a solo home run, before the next batter doubled to end the Ducks' left-handers' day. GCU got some help from the Ducks' later in the inning when a pickoff attempt at third turned into a throwing error that allowed the go-ahead run to score. The Antelopes added an RBI single to make it a 3-1 lead before adding a run in the eighth to make it a three-run lead.
Oregon threatened in the eighth, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Carter Garate doubled into the left-field corner, allowing Maddox Molony to score. Unfortunately for the Ducks, Jeffery Heard would have scored easily from first, but the ball bounced over the wall for a ground rule double keeping Heard at third. Neville ground out to the first baseman to leave Heard and Garate in scoring position.
Box Score Notes: Neville's leadoff home run was his third of the season, with all three coming in the last seven days … Chase Meggers, Oregon leading hitter last season, made his season debut pinch hitting in the ninth inning … Meggers missed Oregon's first 16 games with an injury … Oregon's 11-game winning streak was snapped one game shy of tying the program record of 12-consecutive wins … Umlandt (6.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K) had his first quality start of the season.
On Deck: The Ducks will look for a split on Wednesday in the two-game series with a win. First pitch is at 4:05 p.m.

Head Coach Mark Wasikowski
On 11 runners left on base…
"Yeah, we didn't get the hit with two outs. We've been through the stretch that we've been winning here. We've been getting that hit, and we didn't get the hit today."
On Ian Umlandt's performance…
"Well, I mean, he usually doesn't beat himself, right? You usually got to get to him to beat him. And, you know, for a midweek starter, or any starter at all, to go out there and basically give up one run, or no runs, or two runs on an entire start. That's a good start, you know. And he gives us that pretty much every time he's gone out there. I think he's pretty much done that. He's very valuable."
On Chase Meggars' progression…
"Looks like he should be, you know, he's progressing well, obviously. If we didn't think that he was going to be able to give us a great at bat, then we would have not pinch hit him. You're looking for a left-handed bat off of that arm slot, you know, side arm type guy. And Chase is now back in the fold, which is really nice.
On keeping energy up in the dugout today…
"Well, I don't think it was a lack of energy, they were trying. It's just sometimes you don't get the hit. And some of the at bats, I thought some of the swings were a little bigger than we needed. We need a little bit shorter contact type swing instead of a more of a home run type of an approach. And we discussed that a little bit after the game. But these guys have been going good now for quite a while, and I love sitting up with them, you know, I need to coach better."
