Ducks Settle For Series Win At PK Park

Oregon dropped its finale with Minnesota on Sunday, 9-1.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon settled for a series win in the first weekend of Big Ten Conference play at PK Park, after dropping the finale with Minnesota on Sunday.
In a game delayed more than five hours by rain, the Ducks started slow and couldn't establish traction in a 9-1 loss to the Gophers that was called after eight innings due to Minnesota's travel schedule. Oregon was in a 7-0 hole after three innings, and managed just four hits while committing three errors.
"They did a good job throwing strikes, mixing pitches, keeping us off balance," UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. "They got out of a couple of jams early; we had a bases-loaded situation that they were able to wiggle out of (in the first inning). I thought that was a big momentum play."
Oregon dropped to 17-4 overall with the loss, and suffered its first conference defeat in six games. The team has time to regroup before returning to action with another Big Ten series at PK Park beginning Friday against Rutgers.
"First things first — the guys have finals this week, and so they need to do a good job with their finals," Wasikowski said. "That's what we told them. We need to get some rest. And there's some really positive takeaways from the series. The staff will get together tonight, and we'll break down an entire plan for this coming week."

How It Happened: Oregon starter Will Sanford struggled with his command as rain continued to fall during the early innings. He walked five and had three wild pitches before leaving with one out in the third, and allowed five runs — three of them earned.
The Ducks used three pitchers during Minnesota's six-run third inning, with Ian Umlandt ultimately getting the last two outs of the frame. He then pitched two scoreless innings, and Jaxon Jordan threw the sixth and seventh while striking out five and surrendering only a solo home run.
"Those guys threw it really well, and it was really good," Wasikowski said. "They gave us a chance."

A one-out single by Dominic Hellman, a two-out base hit by Jacob Walsh and a walk to Maddox Molony in the first loaded the bases for the Ducks, but they couldn't cash in.
Oregon's run came in the seventh, when they got two on with two outs and an error brought a run across.
Up Next: The Ducks open their series with Rutgers on Friday (5:05 p.m., B1G+).
