Ducks Walk Off Rutgers In Game One Of Series
03/21/25 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. — Parker Stinson could not have asked for a more perfect Oregon Ducks' debut.
After missing No. 9 Oregon's first 21 games with an injury, the Indiana State transfer delivered a pinch-hit walk-off sacrifice fly in his first career Ducks' plate appearance to hand Rutgers a 4-3 loss in a Big Ten Conference series opener at PK Park on Friday afternoon.
Jacob Walsh, who gave Oregon the lead earlier in the game with a clutch two-strike, two-run base hit, reached on a hit-by-pitch to lead off the ninth before Jack Brooks bunted into a fielder's choice taking Walsh off the bases. Maddox Molony ripped a double into the left-field corner moving Brooks to third with just one out.
Stinson worked a 2-2 count before lifting a fly ball into left-center field allowing Brooks to race home and score the game-winning run.
How It Happened: Both teams scored in the third inning. After Rutgers put two runs on the board on four hits, Mason Neville cut the lead in half with a two-out solo home run.
Oregon (18-4, 6-1 Big Ten) took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs. Chase Meggers started the rally with a hit before moving to third on an Anson Aroz double down the left-field line. Walsh delivered a two-strike base hit to left scoring both Meggers and Aroz.
Rutgers (9-13, 1-3 Big Ten) tied the game in the top of the seventh scoring a run on a wild pitch. The Scarlet Knights threatened to take the lead in both the seventh and the ninth stranding five runners in the two frames, including leaving the bases loaded in the ninth.
After retiring the first two batters in the top of the ninth, Oregon reliever Jaxon Jordan hit the next batter before issuing a walk to put runners on first and second. Closer Cole Stokes came out of the bullpen and loaded the bases with another HBP before getting Yomar Carreras to pop out to third in foul territory to end the threat.
Box Score Notes: Grinsell became just the sixth pitcher in program history to strike out 200 hitters … The Ducks' lefty reached the mark when he fanned the game's second hitter … Grinsell allowed just two earned runs in 6.1 innings of work while fanning eight … Neville's homer was his team-leading 11th of the season … Stokes picked up his first career win.
On Deck: Game two of the series against Rutgers is Saturday with a 2:05 p.m. first pitch.

On overall performance…
"Fantastic I mean, we were able to get a Friday night win. It's hard to do and I was proud of the team's resiliency. I thought they continued to play. You know, we got out of a couple of big spots, Stokes got out of a big spot, I thought Santiago got out of a big spot, you know, I thought Grayson threw the ball exception well tonight. Overall, good to have a win on Friday night."
On bullpen with Santiago Garcia's performance today…
"Just, you know, that's the toughest thing, that that we have right now is the fact that when you look at the pitching staff, you don't have a bunch of guys that have been out there for two to three seasons. It's very talented players, very talented arms that are that are getting out there for the first time. So, you can't discount the experience that they're getting. They'd feel a lot better if they were coming back as an All American after a year or two. And these guys are really talented, and they're just gaining job experience as we go."
On Chase Meggers' impact on the lineup…
"Well, he's a tough kid. His makeup is off the charts. Comes from an unbelievable family just and he can hit, you know, He sprays ball everywhere. He's got some pop in the bat. You know, that's why he did so well in Cape Cod last summer. He's really good player. He's been, we've been out now for 15 games or whatever it's been. It's great to have him back."
Parker Stinson
On getting the call to hit in the ninth...
"Obviously, being on the bench for the first half of the season and coming back from an injury, I'm just excited to be back in the game. It was a really cool opportunity."
On transferring to Oregon...
"These guys know how to win and after my coach left Indiana State, I wanted to go to Omaha in my last year playing college baseball. These guys have a really good chance of doing that."
Jacob Walsh
On the RBI two run single and how ...
"I had an approach going into it and stuck with it throughout the whole at bat and it ended up working for me."
On having Chase Meggers back in the lineup...
"It's awesome. You definitely know when he's back in the lineup. He puts together at-bats no matter the count. Whether there are two strikes or he's up in the count, he's going to get the job done. You know that, so it's a sigh of relief just knowing you have another strong bat in the lineup."
Cole Stokes
On pitching in high pressure situations...
"It seems to be like that every time, but it's good. The pitchers killed it today and that puts me in a favorable spot and I was able to get the win. Yes, it is fun to pitch in those high leverage situations."
On taking on the closer role...
"It's great to have Brad (Mullen). He did it last year and I've been talking to him about it and trying to learn as much as I can. Working in bullpens on situational stuff, just trying to get as comfortable as I can in that situation."
