Ducks’ Comeback Bid Falls Short at Maryland
03/09/25 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Oregon's Karin Young won her fourth straight singles match Sunday, but Maryland was able to fend off the Ducks' comeback bid, 4-1, at Junior Tennis Champions Center.
The Ducks (7-4, 0-2) forced five of the six singles matches to a third set, with four of those bouncing back from an opening-set loss to extend the match. Young, who improved her dual singles record to 7-3 with her fourth consecutive win, overcame a 6-4 first-set loss to win the next two sets 6-1, 6-0 on court two.
Maryland (8-6, 1-1) began the day by winning the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 and pushed its lead to 2-0 with straight-set win on court one. Young trimmed UO's deficit in half with her three-set win before the Terrapins outlasted the Ducks on courts five and six.
Sophomore Tilde Jagare and freshman Patsy Daughters were in a third set when the match was clinched. Jagare overcame a 7-5 opening-set loss to force a third with a 6-4 win in the second, while Daughters won her second set 6-2 after falling in the first 6-1.
The Ducks failed to earn the doubles points for just the fourth time in 11 dual matches, falling at both Nos. 1 and 3. Through 11 spring matches, Oregon's doubles teams are a combined 17-12, while boasting a 33-20 singles mark.
The Ducks return home to the Student Tennis Center next weekend, hosting UCLA on Friday (12:30 p.m.) and USC on Sunday (12:30 p.m.).
