Dominant Reitz leads Oregon to doubleheader split
04/13/25 | Baseball
Reitz (1-0) allowed just two earned runs, both of which came after a misplay on a ball in right field that could have been ruled an error and would have made both unearned. Despite the miscue, the Ducks' right-hander settled in giving up just one more unearned run before exiting the game.
He fanned two hitters in each of the first three innings as well as the seventh inning. His previous career highs were 5.0 inning pitched and eight strikeouts.
Game 1: Maryland 12, #15 Oregon 2 (7)
After Oregon took a 2-0 lead, Maryland scored 12 unanswered runs to run-rule Oregon (24-10, 12-6 Big Ten) in game one of the doubleheader.
Oregon pitchers combined to issue 10 walks (2 intentional) in the seven innings, while the Ducks' offense mustered just five hits in the loss.
How It Happened: Oregon took the lead in the top of the third inning, scoring a pair of runs. Ryan Cooney led off the inning with a base hit and moved to second on a Carter Garate hit-by-pitch. Mason Neville drove in the first run with a RBI double over the right fielders head scoring Cooney. Garate came in to score on a Dominic Hellman fielder's choice.
Maryland (16-21, 4-11 Big Ten) got both runs back in its half of the third, before taking the lead with two more runs in the fifth. The Terrapins tacked on six more in the sixth and two in the seventh to end the game.
Game 2: #15 Oregon 13, Maryland 3
Reitz and two relievers combined to hold the Terrapins to just five hits with 13 strikeouts, while Mason Neville and Jacob Walsh both homered to help Oregon get a bounce-back win.
How It Happened: For the first time in the series, Maryland drew first blood scoring two runs in the bottom of the first before Oregon rallied to tie it in the third.
While tying it, a base running error that ended the inning cost UO another run. Walsh cut the Terps lead in half with a RBI single before Burke-Lee Mabeus tied it with a bases-loaded walk. It should have been 3-2 when Drew Smith flew out to deep left field with one out and the bases full, but Maddox Molony was thrown out trying to advance to third ending the inning before Anson Aroz crossed home plate.
The Ducks took the lead scoring one in the top of the fourth, but left the bases loaded for the third time in the doubleheader. The Ducks' run came on a Walsh bases loaded base on balls.
Maryland tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth before Oregon broke it open in the fifth, scoring five runs all with two outs. Neville went opposite field for a three-run home run and Walsh followed later in the inning with a two-run shot.
Oregon added a run in the sixth inning on a Drew Smith RBI single and then tacked on four more in the ninth for good measure. Molony had an RBI before Aroz scored on an error by the Terrapins catcher. Jeffery Heard and Cooney added an RBI each to account for the final score.
Doubleheader Notes: Oregon left 10 runners on base in the opener, including leaving them loaded in the fourth and seventh innings … They left 15 on board in the second game … Reitz picked up his first career win as a Duck … Neville's home run gave him sole possession of second on Oregon's career home run list with 32 … He also moved into a tie with himself, Drew Cowley and Walsh for fourth all-time on the single-season list with his 16th … Carter Garate tied a career high with four hits in the second game.
On Deck: Oregon is back in action Monday morning (8 a.m. PT) against Georgetown. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
