Rivalry Series Next After Midweek Loss
04/22/25 | Baseball
Oregon dropped a 10-9 battle with Portland at PK Park on Tuesday.
A five-run first inning gave the home team an early lead, and it was 9-4 entering the late innings. But the Pilots scored three runs in both the seventh and eighth to rally back and win.
Oregon (27-12) walked eight hitters on the night, and five of those runners came around to score.
"I want to look at the tape," UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. "At surface value, we didn't throw the ball over the plate good enough to win a game. I would imagine we probably didn't win the strike-throwing contest, from what it feels like. …
"There were some things that I thought we did very well tonight; some things, obviously, we didn't do well enough. And we didn't play well enough to win a game."
Tuesday's loss followed a series win over UCLA the previous weekend. The Ducks will look to get back on track when they open a three-game series Friday at home against Oregon State.
"I think the best way we can do it is by trusting our process and trusting our preparation, especially (Wednesday) and Thursday before the games," UO infielder Ryan Cooney said. "I think that's going to be really important for the guys out there. And then we're going to go out there and just compete, have fun and not try and bring more to the series than it is."
How It Happened: To open the game, it was Oregon that took advantage of free bases. Mason Neville doubled to lead off the bottom of the first, Dominic Hellman walked and Jacob Walsh made it 1-0 with an RBI single that scored Neville.
A sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position, and Anson Aroz plated both with a single. He advanced on a wild pitch and took third when Maddox Molony reached on a two-base error. Cooney drove in both those runners, and it was 5-0 at the end of the first.
Setting the tone for the night, though, Portland made it 5-2 with a walk and a home run to open the second off UO starter Will Sanford.
The back and forth again manifested in the bottom of the third. Two hit batters and a walk loaded the bases for Oregon with two out, Carter Garate scored on a balk and Drew Smith followed with an RBI single for a 7-2 lead. But three walks set the stage for a two-run response from Portland in the top of the fourth.
"Every time we scored, they scored," Wasikowski said. "Credit to them."
The Ducks made it 9-4 in the sixth. Aroz led off with a single and came around to score on a sacrifice bunt by Cooney. A groundball out by Garate then brought Burke-Lee Mabeus home for what turned out to be Oregon's final run of the night.
With two out and a runner on second in the seventh, Portland strung together two walks and two singles to score three times and get within 9-7. In a bright spot for the UO bullpen, Cole Stokes entered and ended the inning with a strikeout.
Another two-out rally gave Portland the lead in the eighth. UO reliever Seth Mattox (2-1) allowed a single and a walk to open the inning, then retired the following two hitters and worked an 0-2 count on the next. Within a strike of ending the threat, the Ducks instead allowed a three-run homer to fall behind 10-9.
The Ducks then stranded three runners in their last two innings, failing to take advantage of a 1-2-3 ninth by reliever Santiago Garcia.
"We're doing everything that we can to be able to put people in situations to succeed right now," Wasikowski said, "and we're obviously not doing a good enough job of it."
Up Next: The Ducks and Beavers open their series at PK Park on Friday (5 p.m., B1G+).
