Ducks Sweep Indiana
04/27/25 | Softball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Rylee McCoy drove in four runs and Staci Chambers got the final two outs of the game with the bases loaded as No. 5 Oregon completed a sweep of Indiana with a 9-7 win Sunday at Andy Mohr Field.
McCoy and Kai Luschar led the Ducks' 17-hit attack with three hits apiece, while Kedre Luschar, Emma Cox, Kaylynn Jones and Katie Flannery each had two
The Ducks have swept five-of-seven Big Ten series this season and have won all seven. At 17-2 in the league, Oregon has a game-and-a-half lead for first place over No. 7 UCLA with three to play.
"Coming into a tough environment like this, it was really important that we just stay focused," said McCoy. "Everyone did their job and took strength from one another so it was a complete team win."
Sunday, Oregon opened up a big lead early and then staved off the Hoosiers' comeback attempt in the last two innings. After Indiana loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, the Ducks went Chambers out of the bullpen.
The lefthander got Madalyn Strader to fly out to shallow left field for the second out of the inning and then struck out Josie Bird, who homered twice earlier on Sunday, to end the game.
"Once it was over, I felt great," said Chambers of her first save of the season. "That's what I do. I've been in that type of situation before and so when coach called my number, it was like, it's nothing new. I've been here before. I've done this. I've just got to put the team on my back right now."
How It Happened: The Ducks scored three runs in the top of the first inning on four consecutive two-out base hits.
Kai Luschar led off with a single and moved up 60 feet on the second of two fly outs.
McCoy hit a line drive that was initially ruled an out on a diving try by right fielder Kinsey Mitchell, but the call was overturned on video review. Luschar scored on the play to give Oregon a 1-0 lead.
Cox followed with a single to give Oregon runners on first and second for Stefini Ma'ake. She bounced a single back up the middle to drive in McCoy.
Dezianna Patmon singled through the left side to bring Cox home and the Ducks led 3-0 after half an inning of play.
Oregon added a fourth run in the second inning. Flannery led off with a double and scored on a two out triple from Kedre Luschar.
The Hoosiers scored a run in the bottom of the second inning. Oregon answered with two runs in the fourth.
Kai Luschar led off with a single into left. Paige Sinicki flew out before Kedre Luschar walked. McCoy's second double of the game drove in Kai Luschar for a 5-1 lead. Cox followed with a single that drove in her second run of the game, giving the Ducks a 6-1 advantage.
McCoy drove in two more runs in the sixth inning.
Ayanna Shaw beat out an infield single and Kedre Luschar reached on a line drive off of the pitcher. McCoy slapped a ball back up the middle that just got past the second baseman. Both runners came home for an 8-2 lead.
"I'm just seeing the ball and honestly, taking one pitch by one pitch and not getting too jumpy or whatever the case may be," said McCoy. "If it's a high-intense situation, I know my plan. I'm trusting myself in all the preparation I put in."
Indiana (30-16, 8-11) got three runs back in the bottom of the sixth, two of which came on Bird's second home run of the game, cutting Oregon's lead to 8-5.
The Ducks added an important insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Shaw's one-out sacrifice fly scored Jones and gave Oregon a 9-5 lead.
Minnick's two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh for Indiana made it a two-run game before Chambers ended it.
"It's kind of corny but I like to say that pressure is a privilege," said Chambers. "If I'm being completely honest, I didn't feel any pressure because we were up. I was just getting the job done for the rest of the team and the rest of the pitching staff. Just doing my part in it."
Elise Sokolsky started and went 4.2 innings to pick up her 13th win of the season. She gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out three.
The Ducks used three pitchers Sunday and three different players – McCoy, Remmington Hewitt and Abby Steffen – played at least an inning at first base as Oregon did some in-game shuffling.
"We could put anybody out on that field and we'll get the job done," said Chambers. "It doesn't matter what pieces are moving. It doesn't matter who's on the field, we're going to get it done. We just handle business."
Notable: The Ducks' 44-5 overall record is tied with the 2014 and 2015 teams for the best record in program history. Both of those teams won the Pac-12 and advanced to the Women's College World Series … McCoy tied her career high with four RBI on Sunday and had eight for the series … Kai Luschar was 8-for-12 in the Indiana series and reached base 11 times in 15 plate appearances … Kedre Luscher hit her team-leading fourth triple of the season … Sinicki made her 177th straight start at shortstop.
Quotable:
Freshman Rylee McCoy on the team's success
"We trust one another. If someone goes down, then we want to do the best we can for that person. Knowing that if they were out there, they'd want the same for us. We pick each other up. We keep saying it but our love for one another is so strong."
Up Next: Oregon travels upstate to South Bend, Ind., for a nonconference game at Notre Dame on Monday (2 p.m. PT, ESPN+).
