Grinsell Excellent Again In Hard-Luck Loss
05/02/25 | Baseball
EAST LANSING, Mich. — For the second time in his last three starts, Oregon starting pitcher Grayson Grinsell tossed a two-hit complete game. The difference this time, Michigan State starter Joseph Dzierwa held No. 6 Oregon's potent offense scoreless in a 2-0 Big Ten Conference win at McLane Stadium in game one of the series on Friday night.
Â
Grinsell (7-2) allowed just one earned run, a solo home run in the fifth inning. MSU's other run came on a two-out error in the second. The Ducks' lefty fanned nine Spartans and retired all 11 batters he faced after giving up the solo homer, six on punch outs.
Â
How It Happened: Michigan State took an early lead with some help from the Ducks. Randy Seymour lifted a two-out fly ball into center field that should have ended the inning, but Anson Aroz dropped it allowing Will Shannon to score an unearned run from first. MSU (24-19, 10-12 Big Ten) added a solo home run, just its second hit of the game, to make it 2-0 in the fifth.
Â
Oregon (31-13, 14-8 Big Ten) managed just three hits of their own while threatening to score against Dzierwa (7-2) on just a couple of occasions.
Â
Ryan Cooney doubled in the third with one out but was stranded at third base. Jacob Walsh flew out to the wall in right-center field in the fourth before Aroz flew out to the wall in left field with a runner on in the seventh.
Â
Box Score Notes: Walsh (LF) and Dominic Hellman (1B) made their first starts of the season at their respective positions, while Aroz made his second start of the season in center field … Drew Smith went 2-for-3 … Cooney reached twice, once on a hard hit ball to the backhand side of the second baseman that was ruled an error … Smith and Cooney were the only Ducks to reach base … Michigan State left no runners on base, thanks to Grinsell picking off a runner at second base in the first and a runner at first base in the fourth … The runner who reached on the Aroz error was throwing out trying to advance to third on the play.
Â
On Deck: Game two of the series is Saturday (12:32 p.m. PT, B1G+).
