PHILADELPHIA - Oregon running back Makhi Hughes was announced on Monday as one of 80 players on the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, which has been presented annually by the Maxwell Football Club to the most outstanding player in college football since 1937.
It is the second honor of the summer for Hughes, who was also selected as a preseason second-team all-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.Â
Hughes was a standout at Tulane each of the last two seasons, rushing for 1,378 yards and seven touchdowns as a redshirt freshman in 2023 before going for 1,401 yards and 15 scores in 2024. He was an all-AAC first-team selection and a Doak Walker Award semifinalist as a redshirt sophomore while ranking 10th nationally in rushing yards and 20th in rushing yards per game (100.1).Â
A native of Birmingham, Ala., Hughes burst onto the scene in 2023 as the AAC Rookie of the Year while earning first-team all-conference honors. He rushed for more than 100 yards in seven of 14 games before doing so once again in 2024.Â
Hughes and the Ducks will open fall camp on Wednesday in preparation for the 2025 season, which kicks off at home against Montana State on Saturday, Aug. 30 (1:00 p.m. PT, Big Ten Network).Â
Single-game tickets for the 2025 season are on sale now.
