Ducks Clip Maryland in Extra Innings
04/11/26 | Softball
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — No. 15 Oregon's NCAA-best 30th sacrifice fly of the season proved to be the game winner as the Ducks came from behind for the 16th time in 2026 to clip Maryland, 4-3, in eight innings.
Â
"I think these guys just keep showing that they know how to go deep into a game and find ways to win," said coach Melyssa Lombardi. "I just love their commitment and how they just stayed together and pulled the win out."
Â
Oregon arrived in extra innings thanks in part to three, two-out RBI singles in the fourth inning from the bottom of the lineup. The bottom of the four batters in the order, Taryn Ho, Stefini Ma'ake, Addison Amaral and Katie Flannery were a combined 6-for-13 with three RBIs. They accounted for all but one of the Ducks' seven hits.
Â
"You've seen that all year, just different people having to pick up at different times or take on strain … So it's just to come back and put three on the board and watch those guys do it with two outs, I think is pretty impressive."
Â
On the other side of the ball, Lyndsey Grein retired 12 of the 13 batters she faced in four scoreless innings in relief, striking out seven, to pick up her 20th win of the season against four losses. The only baserunner the Terrapins had against Grein reached on an error in the eighth inning.
Â
"Definitely a team effort today, found a way to go and get the job done, and Emma (Cox) did a great job helping me behind the plate," said Grein. "Coach called a great game, so I'm just super excited to celebrate."
Â
It was the Ducks' 13th straight series win. Oregon (31-9, 12-2 in the Big Ten) again moved within 1.5 games of first-place Washington. The Huskies hosted Minnesota late on Saturday.
Â
How It Happened: Maryland (14-26, 1-16) grabbed a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first.
Â
The Terrapins threatened to add to that lead in the bottom of the third. But Kaylynn Jones made a diving stop on a ball headed into centerfield and glove-flipped it to Taryn Ho for the force at second to keep Maryland out of scoring position.
Â
The bottom of the order then passed the bat when Ho, Ma'ake and Amaral came through with clutch two-out hits in the fourth inning to give the Ducks the lead.
Â
With runners on first and second, Ho singled up the middle to score Jones and tie the game at 1-1. Ma'ake drove the first pitch she saw into center field to score another run. Amaral made it three hits in a row with a single back through the box that scored Ho for a 3-1 lead.
Â
It was short-lived as Maryland tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run by Zayda Rocke.
Â
It stayed tied at 3-3 into extra innings thanks to a scoreless inning in relief from Maddie Milhorn, followed by Grein's near-perfect turn in the circle.
Â
Ho did her part on defense as well, making a diving, over-the-shoulder catch from shortstop on a pop up to shallow left field to end the fifth inning.
Â
The bottom of the order set the table for the Ducks' winning run in the top of the eighth. Ma'ake led off with her third hit of the day and Amaral was hit by a pitch. Flannery got a sacrifice bunt down to move both runners into scoring position. After Elon Butler was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Jones hit a fly ball to center that was deep enough to score Ma'ake from third.
Â
"It's easy when the people in front of you are getting on and they're giving us the confidence and telling us what they're seeing and what we can do to be successful," said Flannery.
Â
Grein, who struck out the side in the sixth inning, then finished the game by getting swing-and-miss strikeouts for the second and third outs in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
Notable: Saturday marked Grein's 50th win as a Duck, moving her into sole possession of eighth on the UO career wins list … The Ducks are 4-0 in extra inning games this season.

Head Coach Melyssa Lombardi
"I just think when you go on a weekend, you're going to play a three-game series against the same team. Game three, there's nothing left to hide. Everybody's seen everything. To me it's about just really the grit and the determination and the pressure that one team puts on the other to get it."
Â
Junior Katie Flannery on the team's 16th comeback win of 2026
"I mean, we've shown a bunch that we were able to come back, so I think that in the moment we weren't worried about it and we knew we were gonna win. We just didn't know how or what it was gonna look like."
Â
Up Next: Oregon and Maryland close out their series Sunday morning. A reminder that game has been moved up an hour to 8 a.m. Pacific Time (B1G+).
