Long distance specialist (5,000, 10,000) returns for his fifth year in the program. Was a Pac-10 scorer in cross country as a freshman.
2009-10: Cross Country: Opened season with a win at the Pre’s Trail Pre-View, leading Oregon to the team title in his first cross country race in two years. Also ran at the Bill Dellinger Invitational.
2008-09: Did not compete.
2007-08: Two appearances for the cross country team including a team-best second place finish (19:24) at the season-opening Sunriver Open. Also ran in the Bill Dellinger Invitational. Redshirted 2008 track season.
2006-07: NCAA Regional qualifier in the 5,000 meters. Made Pac-10 Championships debut in 5,000, and ended outdoor season ranked fifth for the Ducks in both the 5,000 and 10,000. During the winter season, placed third in the 5,000 at the Mountain Pacific Championships. In his first collegiate indoor mile, ran a personal best in the mile. Redshirted cross country season. 2005-06: In fall, stood third on harrier team in the Pac-10 Championships (24th), and ranked sixth on unit in West Regional and seventh in the Pre-NCAA Invitational. Season Bests: Indoors - 3,000 Meters - 8:17.09 (PR), Husky Collegiate Invitational, Seattle, Wash. (2/11/06). 5,000 Meters - 14:44.89, UW Invitational, Seattle, Wash. (1/27/06).
Prep: As a senior in ’05, he ran a mid-season 3,200 meter personal best of 9:09.85 for the 12th best all-time in Iowa history. Soon after, ran slightly faster to win the Midwest Distance Gala 2-Mile in Illinois (9:07.53) and ranked 16th nationally and fourth in state history. As a prep, was an Iowa state cross country champion and three-time top-10 finisher, and his team won titles in 2002 and ?03 and was second in ?04. Foot Locker Midwest competitor. Added state 3,200 meters runner-up finishes as a junior and senior also took third in the 1,600 meters as a senior.
Personal: Political science major. His father Mark Thomas was an NCAA distance event qualifier for Drake University.
