Jack Smith
- Title:
- Graduate Assistant - Offense
Jack Smith brings a rich background in athletics and coaching to his role at the University of Oregon. As the son of long-time college baseball coach Tracy Smith, Jack grew up immersed in the world of college athletics. Moving frequently and adapting to new environments, he learned the value of embracing discomfort as a catalyst for personal growth—a lesson instilled by his father. The youngest of three brothers, Jack comes from a family steeped in sports, with siblings Casey and Ty excelling in Division I baseball and football, respectively, at Indiana University.
Jack began his playing career at Arizona State, appearing in six games as a true freshman quarterback before an injury ended his playing time. During his recovery, he joined the staff as a student coach, working under Offensive Coordinators Chip Lindsey and Rob Likens with the receivers. This experience ignited his passion for coaching and laid the foundation for his future.
In 2023, Jack joined the University of Oregon staff, assisting with the quarterbacks during Will Stein’s first year as Offensive Coordinator. That season, quarterback Bo Nix thrived under the team’s guidance, culminating in a first-round NFL Draft selection by the Denver Broncos. In 2024, Jack was promoted to Graduate Assistant, expanding his responsibilities to all offensive skill positions, with a particular focus on running backs. Entering the 2025 season, Jack is set to work closely with Oreogn's wide receiver group, further refining his coaching expertise.
Recruiting Philosophy
Jack emphasizes the importance of surrounding athletes with good people and opportunities when choosing a college. He advises prospects to consider environments where they’ll be motivated to show up to work every day. “The most convenient choice isn’t always the best choice,” Jack says, urging athletes to think about long-term fit.
Growing up in a coaching family taught Jack that recruiting is about being genuine and honest. “At the end of the day, the most important person in the recruiting process is the kid. It’s your responsibility as a coach to put them in a good position.”
Education and Entrepreneurship
Jack graduated from Arizona State University with degrees in Communications and Sociology and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Sports Administration. His time as a student-athlete taught him the value of discipline in time management, a skill he carries into his coaching career.
Beyond football, Jack explored entrepreneurship in college. He worked with his brother Casey on a production company specializing in creative sports marketing and co-founded “AddMe,” a social app developed with classmates, which won an award and received funding from the University of Miami Ohio.
