Steven Gortmaker

Steve Gortmaker joined the Ducks as assistant football strength and conditioning coach in 2017 after spending the 2016 season as associate director of athletic performance at South Florida.
Prior to his stint at USF, Gortmaker spent two years as the associate director of strength and conditioning at Southern Miss. The former Oklahoma defensive back, who also served as a strength and conditioning assistant with the Sooners, has assembled an impressive career through the coaching ranks including stops at Tennessee and South Carolina, as well as the 2000 national championship at Oklahoma.
While at Tennessee and South Carolina, Gortmaker served as the associate director of football strength and conditioning. He served on the Vols' staff with both Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley beginning in 2009, and started working with Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks in 2004, serving for four seasons. He came to South Carolina from Kansas, where he was as assistant director of football strength and conditioning for three seasons with Mark Mangino (2002-04).
From 2001 to 2002, Gortmaker served as the head football strength and conditioning coach for Jack Harbaugh at Western Kentucky. There he was responsible for implementing, directing, and supervising the strength, speed and conditioning programs for the WKU football team as they advanced to the 2001 NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.
Prior to joining the WKU staff, Gortmaker served as a strength and conditioning coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999-2001. Considered one of the up-and-coming young strength coaches, Gortmaker was instrumental in preparing the 2000 Associated Press national championship team at OU. In addition to winning the 2000 national title, the Sooners were Big 12 champions in 2000 as well.
During his time on the Sooner staff, Gortmaker served as a volunteer/part-time assistant strength and conditioning coach during the 1999 season, where he worked with the men and women's gymnastics, golf, softball, baseball, track & field, basketball and football. He was elevated to football strength and conditioning with the Sooners in 2000.
Gortmaker is a 1998 graduate of Oklahoma, where he earned his degree in health and sport science. The White Deer, Texas, native played defensive back for the Sooners from 1995-98 and earned academic all-Big 12 honors along with being a Sooner scholar-athlete.
He is married to the former Brooke Martin of Irmo, South Carolina and has a daughter, Mikaela.
