Graduated: Ray completed his requirements to earn his bachelor’s degree in political science in the summer of 2007. All five Oregon seniors will graduate by the end of the 2007-08 season.
Athletes in Action: Competed for an AIA team that toured Australia in the summer of 2007.
2006-07: The only true center on Oregon’s roster played in 23 games with one start. Shot 63.6 percent from the field in limited attempts. Grabbed five rebounds versus Eastern Washington and six against Idaho State. Scored season-high 10 points at Washington. Still looking for more consistent play from the first native Alaskan to suit up for the Ducks. An emotional player. Still learning how to use his size and athletic abilities. “An excellent athlete who runs the floor well,” according to Bob Gibbons All Star Report’s Jeremy Tiers. Patterned his game after Bill Walton and Hakeem Olajuwon.
2005-06: Inconsistent season, but had stretches of brilliant play. Saw action in 26 games, starting 12. Averaged 4.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. Made 66.2 percent of his field goal attempts (45-of-68). Scored career-high 15 points in the season opener versus Savannah State. Had eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded a career-high four assists the next night versus Bowie State. Had career-high eight rebounds at Vanderbilt. Netted 10 points Jan. 7 at Stanford. Scored 13 points in Oregon’s Feb. 23 win at USC.
2004-05: Played in 24 games. Averaged 2.6 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. Shot 58.5 percent from the floor (24-of-41). Best stretch was the final six games of the season where he averaged 5.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. Scored three rebounds with a season-high six rebounds in win at Washington State. Had seven points and five rebounds at Arizona. Five points, six rebounds and a season-high three blocked shots in a home loss to Stanford. Scored a season-high 11 points in win at USC. Netted six points at UCLA to end the season.
2003-04: Redshirt season.
Before Oregon: The Gatorade state player of the year. Named to the Anchorage Daily News All-State first team. Rated by most services as the No. 3 center on the West Coast. Averaged 18 points and 8 rebounds per game as a senior. Led Wasilla High to the state championship game. Scored 24 points in Wasilla’s 45-43 semifinal win over Juneau-Douglas. The Warriors were ranked No. 1 in the state and finished the year 25-3. As a junior, averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game in leading Wasilla to a 22-7 record and the consolation final of the 2002 state tournament. Wasilla claimed three Region III championships during his four years.
Personal: Born Raymond Levi Schafer December 20, 1983, in Wasilla, Alaska. Married the former Sarah Reichner in the summer of 2007. Parents are Dick and Val Schafer. One of seven children, has three older sisters and three younger brothers. Was home schooled prior to attending Wasilla High School for four years. Father played for Arizona State. One of his hobbies is remote controlled airplanes. For his career, Ray not only wants to play professionally, but as an NBA player, he’d like to be a role model for young Alaskans. High School (Coach): Wasilla (Jason Marvel). Major is political science (graduated summer 2007).
