No. 19 Arizona Defeats Volleyball, 3-0
10/17/02 | Women's Volleyball
Dariam Acevedo and Lindsay Closs lead Oregon with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Oct. 17, 2002
EUGENE -- Oregon senior middle blocker Lindsay Closs had 12 points and freshman Dariam Acevedo added 11, but the 19th-ranked Arizona Wildcats held off Oregon, defeating the Ducks 30-19, 30-18, 30-28 in front of 506 fans at McArthur Court Thursday evening. Arizona improves to 9-7 overall, 4-4 Pac-10 and the Ducks fall to 10-12, 0-8.
Despite dropping the first two games and trailing the Wildcats in kills (34-26), Oregon used a solid offensive effort in the third game to nearly avoid the sweep. The Ducks had 18 kills and hit .265 in the final game -- their best showing of the evening. The game was tied at 28, but Arizona outside hitter Kim Glass, who finished the match with 22.5 points (20 kills, two service aces, two block assists) had two consecutive kills to put the match away.
"I don't think we were necessarily playing poorly in the first two games," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "But we were missing one component and that was passing. We made that adjustment in the third game."
Acevedo led all Oregon players with 11 kills and added six digs. Closs had 10 kills and sophomore Lauren Westendorf finished with seven kills and 10 digs.
The Wildcats held the advantage in kills (54-44), digs (50-42) and blocks (10-4) while outhitting Oregon .374-.187.
The Ducks host No. 21 Arizona State Friday at 7 p.m.
