Oregon Tops Oregon State 68-58 in Women's Civil War

EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon needed every player in uniform Saturday against Oregon State ... including Cathrine Kraayeveld. Remember her? After a 13-game absence because of a staph infection in her right knee, Kraayeveld helped spark the Ducks to a 68-58 win over the Beavers before 5,031 fans at McArthur Court.
Kraayeveld, who averaged 16.7 points and 11.7 rebounds in nonconference play, returned to the court with 13:47 left in the first half. She finished with a team-leading nine rebounds and two blocked shots along with seven points in 23 minutes.
"It was a lot of fun," said Kraayeveld, who got a standing ovation from most of the Mac Court crowd when she entered the game. "I was nervous. Everybody had made such a big deal about (me possibly coming back). I felt really good, although my knee might be sore tomorrow."
Oregon picked up its second straight win and improved to 10-13 overall and 6-8 in Pac-10 action. The Ducks move into a tie for sixth place in the conference with Oregon State (12-11, 6-8) and Arizona State (14-9, 6-8). The Sun Devils play tonight at UCLA.
The Ducks, who trailed only in the game's first 30 seconds, led 57-47 on two Kayla Steen free throws with 7:13 left. However, the Beavers went on a 11-4 run, helped by Leilani Estavan's five points and an assist, and were down just 61-58 with 1:59 remaining. Kedzie Gunderson and Alissa Edwards, though, combined for 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Edwards' first free throw at the 35-second mark came after a Kraayeveld offensive board following Amy Taylor's missed 3-pointer.
"Cathrine is an unbelievable basketball player," Oregon coach Bev Smith said. "She's looked good in practice. She's been bothered by fatigue a little, but she's a great player, and it showed.
"We didn't set any limits on how long she would play. We trusted her to tell us when she was feeling tired, and she did. She really gave us a big lift. Cathrine gives us a much better post rotation, which makes our post game all the more effective, and she provides the inside-outside game we didn't have at the four-spot without her."
Steen gave Oregon a lift off the bench, scoring seven of her 11 points in the first half as the Ducks built a 36-24 halftime advantage. Steen made 4-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, in 21 minutes.
"They made some quick runs, and we slowed up rather than going back at them," said Steen, who reached double-figures in points for the first time in 11 games. "But there never was any doubt that we weren't going to pull it out."
Gunderson also had a strong game, leading Oregon in scoring for the first time in her career with 12 points. She nailed a career-high 8-of-9 from the foul line and also set a career-best with five assists including no turnovers.
"Having Cathrine back really pumped us up," Gunderson said. "She's a big part of our team and she does everything for us."
Estavan led OSU with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting to go with five assists. Hollye Chapman added 15 points while Brina Chaney had 10 for the Beavers, who have won twice against the Ducks in the last 16 meetings.
"I am sure that Oregon benefitted from having (Kraayeveld) back," OSU coach Judy Spoelstra said. "We didn't focus on her a lot in practice. She was very active on offense and got a lot of rebounds. It's nice to see her healthy and playing."
Oregon next plays host to Washington State on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Washington on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Washington game, the Ducks' last home game this year, will be televised live on the Oregon Sports Network.
