Washington Women Defeat Ducks, 95-50
01/15/04 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE, Wash. ? When it rained, it really poured Thursday night for the University of Oregon women's basketball team. The Ducks were crushed 95-50 by Washington before 3,940 fans at Bank of America Arena, suffering their worst loss ever in the Pac-10 and third-worst in school history.
“It was very frustrating. The first half was very embarrassing,” Oregon coach Bev Smith said. “The story of the game is rebounds. To me rebounding is effort and we didn't give enough of that tonight.”
The Ducks lost the battle of the boards for the sixth straight game, 56-32. Twenty of the Huskies' rebounds were on the offensive end.
Oregon (9-7, 1-5 Pac-10) scored the first five points of the game before the Huskies outscored the Ducks 47-12 the remainder of the half, as Giuliana Mendiola had 15 of her 19 points before intermission. Oregon could never catch up from there, trailing by at least 30 the rest of the way. Washington (9-7, 2-5) broke a three-game losing skid while handing Oregon its sixth loss in seven games.
Breanne Watson led five Huskies in double-figures with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Gioconda Mendiola added 11 points while Cheri Craddock had 10. Jill Bell came off the bench to grab a game-best 13 rebounds to go with eight points for Washington.
Washington shot 48 percent from the field while Oregon managed just 31 percent. The Huskies were hot from 3-point range, nailing 11-of-25 compared to the Ducks' 2-of-14.
“There's a level of accountability on their part,” Smith said. “There's a general sense on our team that we're playing not to lose instead of playing to win. We have to prepare for Washington State and find some togetherness on our team.”
It marked Oregon's worst loss since the 1974-75 season, in which it lost by 65 points at Oregon State and 50 at Western Washington. The last time the Ducks lost by more than 40 points was a 97-55 setback at Stanford in 1995.
Andrea Bills notched her fifth straight double-digit scoring game with 12 on 4-of-9 shooting to go with a team-high nine rebounds. Brandi Davis was Oregon's other double-figure scorer with a team-high 13 in a reserve role.
Oregon has failed to score at least 60 points in seven straight games.
The Ducks next take on Washington State (4-12, 0-7), which lost 62-51 to Oregon State. Tipoff is Saturday at 2 p.m. at Friel Court.
