Watson & Brown Post Double Jumps Wins in Husky Indoor Preview
01/17/04 | Track and Field
SEATTLE - The University of Oregon men's and women's track and field teams opened their indoor season Saturday with nine wins, six Pac-10 qualifying marks, 35 Mountain Pacific Championships qualifying marks, six wins and one NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the Husky Indoor Preview in the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor.
The Duck women featured one NCAA provisional qualifier, two indoor bests, four winners, and 18 Mountain Pacific Championships qualifiers from their 24-woman unit.
Senior Amanda Brown opened her final season of eligibility with a pair of wins in the long jump (first, 18-8 1/4) and triple jump (first, 39-9 3/4), and also a 2 3/4-inch personal best in the latter event. Among other Duck victors, senior and Wisconsin transfer Bree Fuqua opened her UO career with a win in the shot put (48-10) and senior Mary Etter began her final season for the Ducks with a weight throw win and three-foot, one-inch personal best (58-9 1/2).
Junior Magdalena Sandoval claimed the team's lone NCAA provisional mark in the 3,000. The Los Alamos, N.M. native eclipsed the 9:35.00 standard by more than a second and ranked tops among collegians Saturday with her 12-second personal best (9:33.56), behind a pair of former Arizona State All-Americans - unattached entrant Lisa Aguilera (first, 9:36.09) and Asics runner Kelly MacDonald (9:27.94).
Other women's Mountain Pacific Championships qualifiers included six distance runners - sophomore Sara Schaaf (800, sixth, 2:16.77), senior Eri Macdonald (mile, 4:54.85), junior Laura Harmon (mile, 12th, 5:04.79), sophomore Haripurkh Kahlsa (3,000, 11th, 10:08.20), sophomore Eleanor Gordon (3,000, 13th, 10:22.84).
A trio of pole vaulters also claimed the same distinction as they all cleared the same height (12-1 1/2) - freshman Emily Enders (fifth), Hannah Moore (seventh, 5 1/2-indoor personal best) and senior Kirsten Larwin (ninth). Junior high jumper Rachael Kriz added another qualifier and 1/4-inch personal best (fourth, 5-5 1/4), and junior Clarice Hayward-Lee also earned a Mountain-Pac invite in the triple jump (third, 37-3 1/4). Throws qualifiers included Etter also in the shot put (second, 48-1 1/4), junior transfer Katie Kersh (weight throw, third, 50-10) and senior Jill Hoxmeier (weight throw, fourth, personal best 50-4 3/4).
Among other notes, senior Eri Macdonald was less than a second shy of her personal best in the mile and was only seven seconds shy of the NCAA provisional mark (4:48.40). The pole vault trio was also four inches from the Pac-10 Championships qualifying standard (12-5 1/2).
The 25-Duck man unit was equally prolific and accounted for 17 Mountain Pacific Championships marks, six Pac-10 marks, and five wins - two by junior transfer Leon Watson (long jump, 24-1 1/2; triple jump, 50-8), sophomore Ryan Flaherty (800, 1:52.09), senior James March (shot put, 54-6) and the 4x400 relay (3:11.37).
The 4x400 relay of Travis Anderson, Scott Lamb, Brandon Holliday and Matt Scherer (first, 3:11.37) were less than a second away from the first men's NCAA provisional mark of the season (3:10.40). The Duck anchor Scherer overcame a slow exchange going into the final leg to re-pass the Washington anchor in the opening 200 meters of his leg en route to a sub-46-second handsplit leg.
The men also got a big jump on outdoor qualifying matters with six Pac-10 invites from their field event crew - the high jump trio of sophomores Jeff Lindsey (second, 6-10 3/4) and Teddy Davis (fifth, 6-8 3/4) and freshman Bobby Owen (sixth, 6-8 3/4), and pole vault trio of freshman Tommy Skipper (third, 16-10 3/4), senior Trevor Woods (seventh, 16-4 3/4) and sophomore Jon Derby (ninth, 15-11).
Among other qualifiers from the men's 16 indoor qualifying marks Saturday, a pair of sophomore sprinters earned nods in the 200 - Matt Scherer (second, 21.72) and Travis Anderson (third, 22.06) - freshman hurdler Sol Rexius (60H, second-final, 8.34 (8.30-prelim)), and a fourth pole vaulter - sophomore Andy Young (10th, 15-5).
Saturday marked several notable performances by newcomers. Skipper opened his career as the second collegiate finisher in the pole vault behind returning NCAA indoor champ Brad Walker of Washington (first, 17-4 1/2) and two-time World Championships qualifier and former Duck All-American Piotr Buciarski ((second, 17-4 1/2). Freshman twins Sol and Caleb Rexius each claimed top-five finishes in only their second week of work after playing football in the fall - Sol took second in the 60 hurdle final (8.34) and tops in the prelims (8.30), and Caleb led the Ducks in the 60 final (fourth, 7.15).
Other personal bests Saturday came from redshirt freshman Bobby Owen (high jump, sixth, 6-8 3/4) who had a 3/4-inch improvement and senior Gabriel LeMay (pole vault 11th, 15-5) who had a six-inch best.
Looking ahead, the Ducks have an off-week before they travel to Boise, Idaho for the Bodybuilding.com Invitational, Sat., Jan. 31.
