The No. 28-ranked Duck men notched their sixth-straight top-three finish in the nation's deepest league with their third-place score of 105 points, and trailed No. 2 Stanford (first, 37), No. 9 Arizona State (second, 64). No. 34 Washington followed in fourth (fourth, 116), ahead of UCLA (fifth, 118), No. 39 Arizona (sixth, 138), Washington State (seventh, 140) and California (eighth, 199). "This was our best performance as a team, and individually for our top five runners," Oregon head coach Martin Smith said. "We needed to run well today to get third, and everybody came through. This was a tough course and a tough field, and the guys showed patience and determination, especially in the critical last 1-2 miles where every place is so important. I'm proud of how they ran today." All-Americans and redshirt seniors Ryan Andrus and Eric Logsdon led the Duck men with eighth- and 12th-place efforts and 8K times of 24:39 and 24:44, respectively. "I came in with a cold this week, so I tried to run more conservatively in the first half," Andrus said. "I tried to stay behind Eric for the first two miles, then share the work the rest of the way. We went through the first mile in 4:42 and were about 20th, then gradually started to move up, and were about 12th or 13th with a mile to go. Afterwards I felt pretty good and was happy how it turned out." Both finishes by Andrus and Logsdon netted All-Pac-10 Second Team honors - the second accolade for both Logsdon (also eighth in '03) and Andrus (11th in '03), while the latter was also a first-team honoree in '02 (fifth). The sophomore pair of Patrick Werhane and Kyle Alcorn followed in 22nd (25:09) and 25th (25:15), and freshman Chris Winter wrapped up scoring in 39th overall (25:41). Werhane moved up at least 10-12 places in the second half of the race to improve on a 38th-place finish in the same meet last year, while Alcorn also improved on his 49th-place debut last season. Other Duck finishers included freshmen J.K. Withers (67th, 26:49) and Pat Swick (68th, 26:49). Saturday's effort was the third, third-place effort for the Ducks under sixth-year mentor Martin Smith after they took similar finishes in 1999 and ?01, and were runners-up in 2000, ?02 and ?03. Considering that three Ducks made their Pac-10 debuts, and two other sophomores had never finished top-35 before they went top-25 Saturday, the Duck mentor was happy with the unit's effort. Just as important were head-to-head wins against several conference rivals also in the hunt for NCAA at-large bids in two weeks in the NCAA West Regional. "The team ran really well," Logsdon said. "For me, it wasn't my best race but it wasn't my worst either. When Ryan decided to run with me, it didn't change my strategy - I just ran the same type of race. The faces and names might change, but this conference is so deep that it's always going to be a good field." Overall individually, Arizona's Robert Cheseret held off returning NCAA runner-up Ryan Hall of Stanford down the 400-meter finish straightaway to win, and both were clocked in 23:48. Arizona State's Aaron Aguayo followed in third (24:12), ahead of Stanford's Jacob Gomez (fourth, 24:28) and UCLA's Jon Rankin (24:31). The Pac-10 awards stand welcomed several newcomers since only three returnees from last year's top 12 (Cheseret-third, Logsdon-eighth, Andrus-11th) turned the trick again in ?04. On the women's side, the Duck women raced without two of their top five runners and still took seventh as a team (182 points), only 11 points shy of repeating a fifth-place performance for the third straight season. No. 1 Stanford won with 30 points, ahead of No. 8 Arizona State (second, 47), Washington (third, 100), No. 26 UCLA (fourth, 102), Washington State (fifth, 171), Arizona (sixth, 180), Oregon (seventh, 182), USC (eighth, 233), California (ninth, 237) and Oregon State (10th, 238). The Beavers made their league debut after they re-added the sport at the varsity level this past year. Individually, redshirt senior Laura Harmon led the Ducks for the fourth race this season (fourth, 6K-20:56) - 15 places better than her previous best league finish. The All-Pac-10 First Team honoree ran conservatively early, then moved up consistently in the second half of the race. "Coming in, I wanted to run the same way I've been running all season," Harmon said, "but this field is a little smaller, so I knew I might have to go out a little quicker. I tried to stay relaxed the first mile, and later on a long downhill I focused on trying to roll past people. I wanted to finish top-seven before the race, but I had a little hamstring problem in some workouts so I wasn't totally confident beforehand based on my practices. It felt pretty good today, and Im looking forward to regionals. Each race I get more and more confident, and closer to my goal of getting to nationals." Looking back at prior league races, the Vancouver, Wash., native Harmon had finished 19th ('02), 48th ('01) and 35th ('00) before she redshirted last season. Redshirt junior and first-year Duck harrier Mandi Fitz-Gustafson ran her strongest race of the season and took 37th overall (22:17). Other Duck scorers included freshman and Eugenean Sarah Pearson (47th, 22:40), redshirt juniors Haripurkh Khalsa (56th, 22:46) and Sara Schaaf (57th, 22:46). Other Duck entrants included freshmen Kasey Harwood (72nd, 23:24) and Maegan Kuntz (80th, 23:44). Missing from the Duck lineup Saturday due to injuries were the team's top two freshmen - Katie Leary and Heather Fitz-Gustafson - who had ranked second and fifth on the squad in their season opener in early September. "We were so close to getting fifth so it's a little disappointing in a way," Oregon women's coach Marnie Mason said, "but we have to be realistic, too. Laura ran a great race as did Mandi. Sarah had another good, consistent effort, and all the freshmen are being challenged by a whole new level of competition and learning so much every race. We have a lot to look forward to as we mature and add more talent each year." Individually, Arizona State junior Amy Hastings pulled away slightly in the final mile to win (20:19) over Stanford's Alicia Craig (second, 20:26). The Cardinal's Anita Siraki followed in third (20:46), ahead of Harmon (20:56), Arizona State's Desiree Davila (fifth, 21:00) and Stanford's Amanda Trotter (sixth, 21:08). Looking back to the previous year's results, Hastings had finished fourth in ?03, while Craig was a runner-up on the hilly WSU course in the same time as the winner and teammate Sara Bei (21:12). Both races on the historic course just southeast of Golden Gate Bridge featured a smorgasbord of harrier terrain. The runners looped twice between grassy flats, narrow and rolling forested singletrack, and an elevated, dirt racetrack straightaway. The footing was equally diverse and switched between soft turf, fine gravel, pavement, and several hard-packed trails full of roots, rocks and branches. Complete results are also available at the
Looking ahead, the Duck men's and women's team have a week off from racing before making runs after NCAA invites in the NCAA West Regional Championships, Sat., Nov. 12 at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif. -
